Can Hervé Renard rescue Tunisia’s World Cup hopes? Tunisia have turned to experienced French coach Hervé Renard in a bid to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive after a heavy opening defeat. The North African side suffered a 5 to 1 loss to Sweden in their first match. That result pushed the Tunisian football federation to act quickly, ending Sabri Lamouchi’s short spell in charge. The decision made Tunisia the first team in this tournament cycle to change head coach after just one game. Despite the setback, Tunisia are still in the race to qualify from Group F. The expanded 48 team World Cup format keeps their hopes alive, but the margin for error is now very small. Renard will need immediate impact when he takes charge against Japan on Sunday at 04:00 BST. Why Tunisia chose Hervé Renard Renard brings strong World Cup experience. He has managed at the tournament with both Morocco in 2018 and Saudi Arabia in 2022. His Saudi team produced one of the biggest shocks of that World Cup by beating Argentina in the group stage, even after conceding first to Lionel Messi’s side. That record is a major reason Tunisia turned to him at this critical moment. The federation sees him as a coach who can quickly stabilise a struggling squad and restore confidence. Renard said he accepted the role without hesitation after being approached. He described the job as difficult but motivating, showing belief in the challenge ahead. High pressure start against Japan Renard does not have much time to prepare. His first match in charge comes almost immediately, and it carries serious weight for Tunisia’s qualification hopes. A positive result against Japan could revive their campaign. Another defeat would leave them in a very difficult position in Group F. Renard’s reputation and challenges Renard is known for his calm but intense touchline presence and his trademark white shirts. He has built a reputation for getting strong performances from underdog teams on the world stage. However, turning Tunisia around mid tournament is a different kind of test. He must fix defensive issues, rebuild team confidence, and improve results in a short period.

Candy Stores Are Growing in NYC Despite Economic Pressure Why small sweet shops are expanding during tough times New candy shops are appearing across New York City even though many retailers are struggling due to weak consumer confidence and ongoing inflation. While people are cutting back on larger purchases, demand for small treats like candy remains steady. Industry owners say sweets continue to sell because they are affordable and offer quick comfort. Even during financial stress, customers still want small indulgences they can easily justify. A business model that survived the Great Depression One of the strongest examples is Economy Candy on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. It first opened in 1937 during the tail end of the Great Depression and is now known as the city’s oldest candy store. The shop did not start as a candy store. It began as a hat and shoe repair business, with candy sold outside on a small cart to earn extra income. Over time, repairs became less affordable for customers, so the family shifted fully to sweets. That decision helped the business survive, and it is still running today under third generation ownership. Why candy still sells in uncertain times Owner Mitchell Cohen says people still buy candy even when money feels tight. He explains that inflation and uncertainty reduce spending power, but candy remains an easy and low cost purchase. Recent retail data shows overall US sales are still rising, yet consumer sentiment has dropped to record lows. This gap reflects a split between what people feel and what they still spend on. Experts say candy fits into a pattern often called the “lipstick effect.” When budgets shrink, people avoid expensive items but still buy small luxuries that give emotional comfort. New shops are betting on small treats This trend is also attracting new entrepreneurs. Kate Bolger, a former movie producer, is preparing to open The Village Confectionery in Sleepy Hollow, a town near New York City known for its literary history. Bolger believes customers may delay big purchases but will still spend on small treats like candy. She sees it as a simple way for people to enjoy something small without financial strain. A small luxury that stays resilient Even as the wider retail sector faces pressure, candy stores continue to grow in select areas. Their success is linked to low prices, emotional appeal, and steady demand during uncertain economic conditions.

Deputy Mayor Defends Blocking £25m Palantir Met Police Contract Amid Job Cut Fears Contract decision sparks debate over policing costs and reforms in London London’s deputy mayor for policing and crime, Kaya Comer Schwartz, has defended her decision to stop a £25.3 million contract between the Metropolitan Police and US tech company Palantir. The deal was planned for 2026 to 2027 and included an optional extra year. It was intended to improve criminal investigations and support internal reforms within the force. She told the London Assembly’s Police and Crime Committee that her priority was ensuring public money is spent properly. She said the decision was based on concerns about value for money and accountability. “I make no apologies for making sure we have the right oversight over significant spending,” she said. “We must ensure contracts deliver value for Londoners.” Concerns over procurement and supplier choice The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime raised concerns about how the Met Police handled the procurement process. It said the force engaged seriously with only one supplier during the process. It also noted concerns about the company’s values and ethics, although those issues could not legally determine the final decision. Palantir rejected the criticism. The company said its proposal offered strong value for money and supported ongoing policing needs. It also confirmed it was considering legal action to challenge the decision. Impact on policing and possible job losses Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley warned that the blocked deal could affect staffing plans. He said the force must make budget savings this year and next year, which may lead to difficult decisions affecting public services. He said up to 750 job cuts could be required if funding pressures continue. Those decisions are expected to be finalised in the coming weeks. Conservative Assembly member Susan Hall criticised the decision. She warned it could lead to further cuts in frontline policing and questioned whether the deputy mayor would accept responsibility for the impact. Oversight and unanswered questions During the committee session, Liberal Democrat member Gareth Roberts asked how much detail the deputy mayor had seen about potential cutbacks. Comer Schwartz said she had not yet reviewed a full contingency plan. She added that discussions with the Met were still ongoing. Officials continue to assess how the funding gap will be managed while balancing technology investment, staffing levels, and service delivery across London policing.

    # Elon Musk Becomes World's First Trillionaire Following SpaceX IPO Success Elon Musk has officially become the world's first trillionaire after SpaceX made a historic debut on the Nasdaq stock exchange. The milestone further strengthens Musk's position as the richest person on the planet and highlights the growing influence of his business empire. According to financial reports, Musk's net worth reached approximately $1.11 trillion after SpaceX shares surged during their first day of public trading. Investors showed strong confidence in the company, driving its market value to an impressive $2.2 trillion. ## SpaceX Makes History on Nasdaq SpaceX launched its initial public offering (IPO) with shares priced at $135 each. However, strong investor demand pushed the opening price to $150. During trading, shares climbed as high as $176.50 before settling around $161 at market close. The IPO raised approximately $75 billion from investors, making it one of the largest public offerings ever recorded. The successful launch reflects growing interest in the space industry, artificial intelligence, and future technology projects linked to Musk. ## Musk's Massive Ownership Stake Musk owns about 42% of SpaceX, giving him significant control over the company and its long-term direction. Bloomberg estimates that Musk's SpaceX holdings are worth around $767 billion. In addition, he holds billions of dollars in SpaceX stock options. His wealth also includes major holdings in Tesla, where his shares and stock options add hundreds of billions more to his fortune. The combined value of these assets pushed his total net worth beyond the trillion-dollar mark for the first time in history. ## Growing Debate Over Wealth Inequality Musk's trillionaire status has renewed discussions about wealth inequality around the world. His personal fortune now rivals the annual economic output of some developed nations, including Poland and Switzerland. Supporters argue that Musk's wealth reflects innovation, entrepreneurship, and successful investment in transformative technologies. Critics, however, question whether such concentrated wealth is healthy for society and the global economy. ## Political Influence Under Scrutiny Beyond business, Musk remains one of the most influential figures in global politics. He has publicly supported political causes and candidates, including US President Donald Trump's re-election campaign. Musk also played a leading role in government efficiency initiatives that focused on reducing public spending. Some of those measures attracted criticism from humanitarian organizations and policy experts who warned about their potential social impact. ## What Comes Next for SpaceX? The successful stock market debut provides SpaceX with substantial financial resources to expand its operations. The company is expected to invest heavily in space exploration, satellite communications, artificial intelligence, and future technological innovations. As SpaceX enters a new chapter as a publicly traded company, investors and industry experts will closely watch its next moves. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's record-breaking fortune continues to reshape discussions about business, technology, and wealth in the modern era.

    # SpaceX IPO Makes History as Elon Musk Moves Closer to Trillion-Dollar Milestone ## Subheading The world's largest public offering marks a historic moment for SpaceX and could push Elon Musk into unprecedented financial territory. SpaceX has officially entered a new chapter by launching what is expected to become the biggest initial public offering (IPO) in stock market history. The landmark event highlights the company's remarkable journey from a risky startup to one of the world's most valuable businesses. Speaking from SpaceX headquarters in southern Texas, founder Elon Musk reflected on the company's early struggles. He revealed that when SpaceX first began, he believed it had less than a 10% chance of surviving. Today, that same company is making history with a record-breaking stock market debut. ## A Historic Day for SpaceX The official start of trading was celebrated through ceremonies in both Texas and New York. Company executives, employees, and investors marked the occasion with opening bell celebrations, while thousands watched the event live. Senior executives, including Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen and President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell, joined the celebrations as SpaceX shares officially entered the public market. Musk addressed employees and viewers through a live video message from Texas, describing the IPO as a major milestone for the company and everyone who helped build it. ## Elon Musk Nears an Unprecedented Financial Record If SpaceX shares reach or move beyond the suggested price of $135 per share, Elon Musk could become the first person in history with a net worth exceeding $1 trillion. The figure is difficult to imagine. A trillion equals one thousand billion, or 1,000,000,000,000. To understand its scale, consider a few comparisons: * King Charles' estimated personal wealth is below $1 billion. * The Dallas Cowboys are valued at around $13 billion. * Uber's market value stands at roughly $142 billion. * An average American worker would need more than 16 million years to earn $1 trillion. * The amount is also close to the value of Switzerland's entire economy. ## A Defining Moment for the Global Market The SpaceX IPO represents more than a financial event. It reflects years of innovation, private investment, and rapid growth in the commercial space industry. Investors around the world are closely watching the company's market performance, while analysts believe its public listing could reshape the future of aerospace investment and global financial markets. As trading begins, SpaceX has already secured its place in financial history. The coming days will determine just how far its valuation—and Elon Musk's personal fortune—can climb.

Trial Confirmed in France Morocco captain and Paris Saint Germain defender Achraf Hakimi will face trial in France after prosecutors confirmed the case will proceed. French authorities say the case involves an allegation from 2023, when a 24 year old woman accused him of rape at his home in Paris. An investigating judge ordered the trial in February 2026 after a long legal process that started in March 2023. Hakimi has denied all accusations from the beginning. He recently lost an appeal to stop the trial from going ahead, according to French media reports. Hakimi Responds Publicly Hakimi spoke on social media and rejected the allegations again. He said he has waited for years to present his side in court. He also claimed the case has affected his family and reputation. He added that he believes the justice process will allow him to speak openly and clear his name in court. Complainant Legal Position The lawyer for the woman involved said the court decision brings relief after years of legal proceedings. She said her client now has the chance to be heard properly in court. She also said the trial may support wider efforts to address sexual violence and challenge denial in professional sport environments. Football and World Cup Context Hakimi remains part of the Morocco national squad Morocco national football team and is expected to lead the team in upcoming matches. Morocco are currently playing World Cup fixtures in the United States. There are possible travel complications depending on where matches are held, since the tournament is co hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Earlier in the tournament, Thomas Partey missed a match after being denied entry to Canada while facing separate legal charges. Career Background Hakimi made his international debut in 2016 at the age of 17. He played a key role in Morocco reaching the World Cup semi finals in 2022, the first African team to do so. At club level, he joined Paris Saint Germain in 2021 and has won multiple trophies, including major European titles during his career.

    # Japanese World Cup Fans Praised for Stadium Cleanup but Face Criticism at Home ## Japanese Fans Applauded for Stadium Cleanup Japanese football fans have once again gained international attention for cleaning stadiums after World Cup matches. Photos showing supporters collecting trash from the stands quickly spread online and received praise from football fans around the world. Cleaning up public spaces is a long standing tradition in Japan. Many people view it as a sign of respect and responsibility. As a result, Japanese supporters are often recognized for leaving stadiums clean after major sporting events. ## Viral Debate Highlights Household Responsibilities While many people admired the gesture, others in Japan raised a different question. They asked whether the same level of responsibility exists inside the home. A viral social media post sparked the discussion. The image showed a man cleaning a stadium after a football match. Next to it was another image of the same man relaxing on a sofa while his wife handled household chores. The message encouraged Japanese men to contribute more to housework. It suggested that public acts of cleanliness should be matched by equal effort at home. The post quickly gained attention and received more than 60,000 likes on X. Many users joined the conversation. Some argued that helping with daily household tasks is just as important as cleaning public spaces. Others pointed out that many women continue to carry most of the responsibility for childcare and housework. ## Japanese Men Spend Less Time on Housework Recent data supports these concerns. According to figures from the Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD), Japanese men spend far less time on unpaid household work than women. Data from 2021 shows that women spend more than three hours each day on unpaid work. Men spend only 47 minutes on average. The gap becomes even wider in families with young children. A government survey found that women in dual income households with children under six spend more than seven hours a day on childcare and household duties. Men spend less than two hours. ## Calls for Greater Equality at Home The discussion has renewed calls for a more balanced division of household responsibilities. Many people believe men should play a larger role in childcare, cooking, cleaning, and other daily tasks. Supporters of this view say public behavior should reflect private behavior. They argue that true responsibility includes helping both in the community and at home. As Japanese fans continue to receive praise for their stadium cleanup efforts, the debate has also highlighted a broader issue. Many people now hope the same spirit of teamwork and responsibility can extend beyond the football stadium and into everyday family life.

Refugee Stars at the World Stage: From War Zones to the World Cup Antonio Rüdiger’s Escape from Sierra Leone’s War Antonio Rüdiger, now a defender for Germany, has a family history shaped by survival. His parents fled Sierra Leone during a brutal civil war to seek safety in Europe. Without that escape, his life could have been very different. Rüdiger shared that his family had no real choice but to leave. His relatives later described the dangerous journey from Kono to Freetown, a distance of about 340 km. The path was full of armed conflict and fear. During that journey, his uncle protected children in extreme ways. He hid them inside sacks of rice to avoid detection by armed groups. At times, they even stayed still and pretended to be dead to survive. After reaching safety, the family rebuilt their lives in Germany. Rüdiger was born in Berlin and grew up in a refugee centre with other families in similar situations. He says this experience taught him that success only comes through effort and sacrifice. Alphonso Davies and Life in a Ghana Refugee Camp Alphonso Davies, captain of Canada, also comes from a refugee background. His parents fled Liberia during years of civil war and settled in a refugee camp in Ghana when he was young. Later, the family moved to Canada, where his life changed completely. He attended school for the first time, made friends, and discovered football in a safe environment. Davies often says Canada gave him the chance to grow and live freely. That support allowed him to build a professional career and reach the highest level of international football. A Shared Story of Survival and Hope Both players represent different countries at the highest level, but their early lives share a common thread of displacement and resilience. Their journeys highlight how refugees, when given safety and opportunity, can achieve success on a global stage. They now use their platforms to speak about refugee experiences and the importance of support and inclusion.

Toy Story 5 Review: Mixed Critical Response as Film Highlights Tech Dependence Message Overview Toy Story 5 has landed in cinemas in the UK and is already dividing critics. The new chapter in the long running Pixar series brings back Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie, but introduces a modern twist that puts technology at the center of the story. While some reviewers see it as a timely update, others feel the franchise has lost its spark. Story and New Character The plot follows the toys as they try to protect their young owner Bonnie from a new digital threat. A frog like smart device named Lilypad becomes the main rival for the child’s attention. Buzz, Woody, and Jessie team up again to keep their place in Bonnie’s life. The voice cast returns with Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Greta Lee joins the cast as Lilypad, while Conan O’Brien, Jordan North, and Bad Bunny also contribute voice roles. Critics Divided on the Film Reviews have been split. Some critics called the film a light and clever update to the franchise. Others were far less impressed. Clarisse Loughrey from The Independent gave it two stars. She said the film feels current but also argued it is the weakest entry in the series. She noted that the long running franchise has started to lose momentum. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian also gave it two stars. He said the series now feels exhausted and in need of fresh ideas. He also criticized parts of the plot, calling the resolution unsatisfying. A Clear Message About Technology Despite the mixed reviews, most critics agreed on one point. The film focuses strongly on the impact of digital devices on children. Lilypad represents modern screen culture, and the story explores how technology competes with traditional play. This theme connects with wider public debate, especially after recent discussions in the UK about restricting social media use for under 16s. Conclusion Toy Story 5 tries to balance nostalgia with a modern message about technology. While some viewers may appreciate its themes, critics remain divided on whether the franchise still has fresh ideas to offer.

Police Launch Manhunt After Deadly Johannesburg Shooting Police in South Africa are searching for suspects after a violent attack in Johannesburg left 12 people dead and nine others injured. The incident took place in an informal settlement in the Cleveland area late Tuesday night. Authorities say a group of armed men arrived in the area and opened fire on residents before escaping in a vehicle. How the Attack Happened Police report that more than 10 armed suspects entered the Jumpers Informal Settlement. They moved through different parts of the community and fired on people at several locations. Officials say the attackers fled the scene in a white Toyota Quantum after carrying out the assault. Emergency services arrived after receiving reports of ongoing gunfire at around 23:10 local time. Police and medical teams found multiple victims at the scene. Casualties and Injuries Eight men and three women died at the location. One more victim died later in hospital due to severe injuries. Nine additional people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their condition has not been fully updated by authorities. Possible Motive Under Investigation Investigators have not confirmed a clear motive yet. However, police and local residents suspect the attack may be linked to disputes involving illegal mining groups operating in the area. Illegal mining has grown in parts of South Africa and is often connected to criminal networks and territorial conflicts. Police have described the attack as violent and deeply disturbing while continuing efforts to identify those responsible. Community and Police Response Residents of the informal settlement believe the violence may be connected to ongoing turf tensions. Police have not ruled out organized criminal activity. Law enforcement teams are reviewing evidence and following multiple leads to track down the suspects. A senior police official said the area remains under close investigation due to its proximity to illegal mining zones. Illegal Mining and Rising Violence Illegal mining continues to be a major concern in South Africa. It often takes place in abandoned mine areas where groups compete for control of resources. Authorities say such conflicts can escalate into violent confrontations that put local communities at risk.

Alleged Hitman Teen Mocked Police During Huddersfield Arrest Arrest at Briar Court Hotel A 19 year old Norwegian man named Johannes Natland has been accused of travelling to the United Kingdom for a planned killing linked to organised crime. Police arrested him at the Briar Court Hotel in Huddersfield. Officers found two firearms and 12 live rounds of ammunition. Body worn camera footage shown at the Old Bailey captured the moment he opened his hotel room door. A laser sight was pointed at his chest. He then allegedly mimed holding a gun and acted out shooting toward officers. Charges and Court Plea He has admitted possession of two working firearms and ammunition. He denies conspiracy to murder. Prosecutors claim he was sent to the UK to carry out a targeted killing for a criminal group known as Foxtrot Network. They say the group has links to Iran. The case is being heard at the Old Bailey. Messages and Travel Into the UK Court evidence says he joined a Signal group chat shortly after turning 18. He reportedly asked who the target was soon after joining. He later travelled from Stavanger in Norway to Manchester using an emergency passport. At the airport, Border Force officers questioned him. He had only a small amount of cash, no return ticket, and no accommodation booked. He was refused entry but allowed a temporary stay before a planned return flight. Cash Drops and Firearms Instructions After arriving in the UK, he took a taxi to Huddersfield. He was allegedly guided by messages to hidden cash near a walkway underpass. He collected the money and checked into a hotel, paying in cash. Further instructions reportedly led him to woodland outside the town, where he collected two handguns. He was also directed to a stolen car with a hidden key placed under a wheel. Online Sharing and Behaviour Later that day, he bought alcohol and sent videos of the weapons to a friend. He also sent images showing cash spread across a hotel bed. In another image shared earlier, he posed with money laid out in front of him inside the hotel room.

The siblings of Sara Sharif have been living in Pakistan since October 2023. They currently stay with their paternal grandfather in Jhelum. A long running legal process has taken place across both England and Pakistan over custody and where the children should live. Sara Sharif, a 10 year old girl, was killed in August 2023 in Woking. Her father Urfan Sharif and stepmother Beinash Batool were later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Her uncle Faisal Malik was also convicted for his role in the case. Custody situation in Pakistan Five children in the family have been at the center of custody proceedings in Pakistan. They were initially placed in temporary care after being found in Jhelum in September 2023. Later, their paternal grandfather gained temporary custody. He has continued to argue that the children should stay with him in Pakistan. The children attend school in Pakistan, except the youngest. Position of Surrey County Council Surrey County Council was involved in efforts to return the children to the United Kingdom through Pakistani legal channels. The council later withdrew from the case. It stated that it no longer had a legal route to continue proceedings in Pakistan, as the English legal process was closing. Current legal outlook The final custody decision is still not completed in Pakistan. However, both possible outcomes under discussion would keep the children in Pakistan for now. The grandfather’s legal team says the children hold dual nationality. They also say the children can choose to return to the United Kingdom in the future if they wish.

Overnight Parking Restrictions in Eryri National Park Paused After Local Concerns Rise Overview Overnight parking rules at several car parks in Eryri National Park have been paused after concerns grew about worsening antisocial behaviour. The authority had introduced limits in April across eleven car parks to reduce litter, damage, and inappropriate overnight stays. Nine car parks will now allow overnight parking again while further public consultation takes place. Why the Restrictions Were Introduced The park authority brought in overnight parking limits to control growing issues linked to camper vans and late night stays. These issues included littering, noise, and misuse of public spaces. The aim was to protect the environment and improve conditions for both visitors and residents. Nearly four million people visit the park each year, and many begin early morning hikes to reach Yr Wyddfa for sunrise. Local Concerns About the Ban Some residents and local business owners said the restrictions created new problems instead of solving them. In Betws y Coed, a guesthouse owner reported increased camper van parking on residential streets. He also described situations where private gardens were being used inappropriately, raising concerns among homeowners. Locals said the pressure on nearby streets increased after the restrictions came into force. Decision to Pause the Policy At the authoritys annual meeting, members agreed to pause the overnight parking restrictions. The decision followed feedback from residents, visitors, and tourism operators who raised concerns about the impact of the policy. Officials said further consultation is needed to find a better balance between visitor access and local wellbeing. What Happens Next The authority will continue reviewing parking management across the national park. The focus is now on reducing antisocial behaviour while still supporting tourism and early morning access to key hiking routes.

# Five Men Jailed After Violence Erupts at Henry Nowak Protest ## Protest Turns Violent Following Henry Nowak Case Five men have been sentenced to prison after taking part in violent disorder during a protest in Southampton linked to the death of Henry Nowak. The demonstration took place on 2 June after the release of police body camera footage showing the final moments of 18 year old Henry Nowak's life. Nowak died after being stabbed by Vickrum Digwa, who later received a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years. The protest quickly escalated into violence. Officers faced attacks from members of the crowd, while objects were thrown at police lines. ## Police Officers Injured During Disorder The unrest left 12 police officers injured. A police dog also suffered injuries during the incident. Protesters threw wheelie bins, chairs, stones, and other objects at officers. Police worked to control the situation as tensions rose throughout the gathering. The court heard that the violence caused significant disruption and placed both officers and members of the public at risk. ## Court Hands Down Prison Sentences Southampton Crown Court sentenced five men for their involvement in the disorder. Daniel Frost, 44, from Southampton, received a prison sentence of two years and four months. The court heard he threw chairs and a bin into the road. He also carried a modified dog lead fitted with a metal carabiner that could be used as a weapon. Reece Robinson, 21, from Havant, was sentenced to two years in prison. Evidence showed he stood near the front of the crowd and threw stones or bricks towards police officers. Taylor Grundy, 22, from Gosport, was jailed for two and a half years for his role in the disorder. Andrew Summerhayes, 38, from Romsey, received the longest sentence of three years and two months. Prosecutors said he pushed a large bin into police officers during the violence. The court also noted his lengthy criminal record. Dillon Crawford, 29, from Southampton, was sentenced to three years in prison. ## Judge Condemns Actions of Protesters Judge William Mousley KC strongly criticised the behaviour of those involved. He described the incident as a serious outbreak of public disorder. The judge stated that hostility toward police officers played a major role in the violence. During sentencing, the court highlighted the dangerous nature of the attacks on officers and the impact the disorder had on the local community. The judge also pointed out that several defendants actively encouraged or participated in confrontational behaviour rather than leaving the scene when violence began. ## Impact on Community The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent public disorder. While peaceful protest remains a legal right, the court made clear that attacks on police officers and public violence will result in serious penalties. The prison sentences reflect the severity of the disorder and the injuries suffered by officers during the incident.

# FIFA World Cup 2026 Expected to Become the Biggest Betting Event in History ## Global Betting Volume Could Cross $50 Billion The 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup is expected to become the biggest betting event ever recorded. Industry forecasts suggest that people around the world could place more than **$50 billion** in bets during the tournament. Financial experts estimate that each match may attract nearly **$500 million** in wagers. If those predictions prove accurate, the total betting volume will significantly exceed the estimated **$35 billion** recorded during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. ## Expanded Tournament Set to Drive Betting Growth One of the biggest reasons behind the expected increase is the expansion of the tournament from **32 teams to 48 teams**. The larger format means fans will enjoy more than **100 matches** across six weeks instead of the previous 64-game schedule. More games naturally create more betting opportunities. At the same time, the tournament's location in the United States, Canada, and Mexico offers favorable viewing times for audiences across Europe, Latin America, and Africa. That wider accessibility could further boost betting activity worldwide. ## US Sports Betting Market Continues to Expand The growing legalization of sports betting in the United States is another major factor behind the projected surge. Today, around **65% of the US population** can legally place sports bets, compared with roughly **40% during the 2022 World Cup**. This marks the first FIFA World Cup where a majority of Americans have legal access to sports betting platforms. Industry analysts believe betting companies could see substantial revenue during the event. However, they also warn that converting occasional World Cup bettors into long-term customers remains a significant challenge. ## Gambling Awareness Groups Raise Serious Concerns While betting companies expect strong business, gambling awareness organizations have expressed concern about the social impact. Campaigners warn that many people, especially young men, could experience serious financial problems because of excessive gambling during the tournament. They also argue that most long-term sports bettors lose money and may eventually be encouraged to use more addictive casino-style products. Several reform advocates have urged governments to strengthen consumer protections and introduce stricter measures against harmful gambling practices. ## Regulators Eye Stronger Oversight Regulatory authorities in the United States are also reviewing online betting markets. Officials have announced plans to consider updated rules as online betting and trading continue to expand rapidly. The proposed changes aim to improve oversight and respond to the growing popularity of digital wagering platforms. ## Looking Ahead The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises unforgettable football action and record-breaking fan engagement. At the same time, experts continue to debate the risks associated with the expected surge in global betting activity. As excitement builds for the tournament, responsible gambling and stronger consumer protections are likely to remain important topics alongside the action on the pitch.
