On Monday, in the nation’s capital of Dhaka, Shahjahan Bhuiyan, 74, was admitted to the hospital following a complaint of chest problems.
Later, while receiving treatment, he passed away, according to local media.
Although some reports have the number of executions Bhuiyan performed as high as 60, it is believed that he carried out at least 26.
A former rebel, he was sentenced to 42 years in prison for murder and robbery when he turned into a hangman.
Bhuiyan was granted an early release of ten years from prison last year, fulfilling his wish to have his sentence shortened by volunteering to be an executioner.
Among those who perished at his hands were military personnel convicted of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh’s prime minister at the moment of the country’s formation.
Along with serial killer Ershad Shikder, he also put to death politicians Ali Ahsan Mujahid and Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury on charges of war crimes.
According to reports, Bhuiyan had always defended his executioner duties by stating, “If I didn’t hang them, someone else would.”
An explanation of the hanging process was included in a book about his experiences that was published earlier this year and garnered a lot of interest.
