ISLAMABAD: In addition to dismissing a writ case involving an underage marriage, the Islamabad High Court issued general recommendations for legislative changes pertaining to child weddings in Pakistan.
In a case brought by petitioner Muhammad Riaz, who wanted his wife Madiha Bibi returned after her family had taken her from his house, Justice Muhammad Azam Khan rendered a thorough ruling. Despite the woman’s family’s opposition, the couple got married on May 30, 2025, at the Tehsil Courts Complex in Taxila, according to The News.
A factual dispute was at the heart of the case: Madiha’s age was listed as “almost 18 years” on the marriage document (Nikahnama), while her birthdate was listed as September 15, 2009, on a birth certificate registered after the marriage.
