Colombian President Gustavo Petro has sharply criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump, labeling him a “barbarian” in response to lethal attacks on boats accused of transporting illegal drugs. Speaking to NBC News from Bogota, Petro explained his decision to halt intelligence-sharing with the U.S., arguing that providing such information would make Colombia complicit in acts he calls crimes against humanity.
“The primary goal of intelligence is to fight crime, not to carry out killings,” Petro emphasized. He described the U.S. military presence in the Caribbean as “a clear act of aggression against Latin America,” highlighting the regional tensions caused by these operations. While acknowledging the importance of international intelligence cooperation in tackling drug trafficking, Petro insisted that Colombia will not support actions that result in loss of life.
