Hong Kong, November 26, 2025 – A massive fire has ripped through the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po, northern Hong Kong, leaving at least 36 people dead and 279 others unaccounted for, authorities said Thursday.
The blaze, which began on bamboo scaffolding surrounding several apartment blocks, quickly spread, engulfing multiple buildings. Thick black smoke and towering flames were reported by witnesses as they evacuated the area.
“This fire has caused the deaths of 36 people and left 279 unaccounted for. Rescue and firefighting efforts are ongoing,” Lee said during an early-morning press briefing.
Firefighters declared a five-alarm fire, the highest emergency level, as they battle the flames and search for missing residents. AFP reporters on the scene heard loud cracking sounds, likely from the burning bamboo scaffolding, while flames consumed at least five of the estate’s eight buildings.
Authorities are urging residents to stay away from the area as investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.
