Bangladesh authorities have confiscated approximately 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of gold valued at $1.3 million from bank lockers owned by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, officials confirmed Wednesday.
The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) discovered the gold—including coins, bars, and jewelry—after opening lockers seized in September. Investigators revealed that Hasina failed to deposit certain gifts received during her tenure into the state treasury, or “Toshakhana,” as mandated by law.
The NBR is also examining whether Hasina declared the seized gold in her tax filings amid allegations of tax evasion.
Bangladesh has faced political unrest since Hasina’s exit, with violent incidents reported during campaigns for the upcoming February 2026 elections. Earlier this month, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death over her role in a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising, which reportedly claimed up to 1,400 lives, according to the United Nations.
