In Cilacap city, a massive landslide swept through Cibeunying village last week, burying a dozen homes. Rescue teams faced extreme challenges as victims were trapped under 3 to 8 meters (10 to 25 feet) of debris. M Abdullah, head of the local search and rescue division, reported 16 fatalities and seven people still missing. Excavators were deployed to help recover victims, according to KompasTV footage.
Meanwhile, Banjarnegara district experienced a separate landslide on Saturday, killing two and leaving 27 missing. Around 30 homes and nearby farms were damaged in the disaster.
Indonesia’s wet season, which began in September and is expected to continue until April, increases the risk of heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides, the national weather agency warned.
