dead,At least 18 people have been confirmed dead and several dozen remain missing after rain-triggered landslides devastated parts of Central Java, Indonesia, last week. Rescue teams are still battling harsh conditions as the search continues.
In Cilacap, a massive landslide buried multiple homes in Cibeunying village, trapping residents under 3 to 8 meters (10–25 feet) of mud and debris. According to local rescue officials, the disaster has already claimed 16 lives, while seven more people are still unaccounted for. Heavy excavators have been deployed to dig through the thick soil, as shown in footage by Kompas TV.
A separate landslide struck Banjarnegara on Saturday, killing two people and leaving 27 missing, officials confirmed. The disaster also destroyed around 30 houses and damaged surrounding farmland.
Indonesia’s wet season, which began in September and may extend until April, continues to bring extreme rainfall and heightens the risk of flooding and landslides across the region, the national weather agency warned.
