LINCOLN, Neb. – Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, a defining and polarizing force in American politics who shaped the nation’s response to the 9/11 attacks, has died. He was 84.
In a statement released by his family, Cheney passed away on Monday due to complications from pneumonia, in addition to long-standing heart and vascular disease.
Serving as the 46th vice president under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, Cheney was a principal architect of U.S. foreign policy during a tumultuous period. He was a leading advocate for the 2003 Iraq War, asserting with high confidence that Saddam Hussein’s regime possessed weapons of mass destruction. Subsequent investigations found no such weapons, a fact that later defined much of the criticism of his tenure.
Cheney dramatically expanded the power and influence of the vice presidency, becoming one of the most powerful figures in the White House. His unwavering focus on national security often led to internal conflicts with other administration officials, including Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.
His legacy remains deeply contested, particularly for his vigorous defense of enhanced interrogation techniques against terror suspects. Methods such as waterboarding were later widely condemned as torture, but Cheney consistently argued they were legal and crucial for preventing another attack on American soil.
Before his eight years as vice president, Cheney had a long and distinguished career in public service and the private sector. He served as a U.S. Representative from Wyoming, as Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush, where he oversaw the 1991 Gulf War, and later as the CEO of Halliburton Company, a global oilfield services corporation.
Cheney’s health was a lifelong challenge. He suffered his first of five heart attacks at age 37 and underwent a heart transplant in 2012.
His political dynasty continued with his daughter, Liz Cheney, who served as a U.S. Representative from Wyoming. Her political career ended after she broke with her party to oppose Donald Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot. In a notable political shift, the elder Cheney supported his daughter’s stance, publicly denouncing Trump as a threat to the nation and stating he would vote for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election over the former president.
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1941, Dick Cheney rose from a Democratic household to become a quintessential Republican power broker. His complex legacy on executive power, national security, and foreign policy continues to provoke debate and shape the American political landscape.
