What Is a Swag Gap?
Couples with noticeable differences in fashion or style are often described as having a “swag gap.” One partner may be more stylish and put effort into their appearance, while the other might seem less concerned with fashion.
Ifesinachi Mamah, 23, from East London, says she could not date someone who didn’t care about their appearance. “I just want us to both look good,” she explains. “If you see two people together, your overall vibe should at least flow cohesively.”
Famous Examples of Swag Gaps
High-profile couples often show this contrast. Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey had one such moment during an event for her beauty brand in August 2023. Bieber wore a grey tracksuit with yellow Crocs and a pink cap. Hailey, on the other hand, looked chic in a red mini-dress with matching shoes and bag.
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are another couple often cited as having a swag gap.
Why Style Differences Matter
A swag gap isn’t just about looking mismatched in public. According to Ifesinachi, it can reflect differences in lifestyle and effort in the relationship. If one partner doesn’t care about their appearance, they might also be less invested in planning dates or outings.
Dating coach Vicki Pavitt explains that swag gaps may lead to tension. “People want to feel proud standing beside their partner. If one person puts in less effort, it can feel disrespectful,” she says.
When It’s Not a Big Deal
Not every swag gap signals conflict. Some partners simply aren’t fashion-conscious, even if they try. Relationship psychologist Anjula Mutanda notes, “Your partner may make an effort, but in your mind, they don’t match your high standard.”
Problems arise only if one partner feels superior or uses their style to assert control, creating an unhealthy dynamic.
