Vikram-1 took off from the Indian Space Research Organisation's launch facility in Sriharikota on Saturday What if launching a satellite was as easy as calling a cab? That's the vision behind an Indian private rocket company that achieved its first orbital launch on Saturday. Skyroot Aerospace, which recently became India's first space tech unicorn after reaching $1.1bn valuation, launched Vikram-1 from the Indian Space Research Organisation's (Isro) launch facility in Sriharikota in southern India. The seven-storey rocket lifted off at 12:05 India time [06:35 GMT] and travelled 280 miles (450km) to reach the Low Earth Orbit in a 16-minute flight. Skyroot is the first Indian private company to launch a rocket into orbit, making India only the third country, after the US and China, with a private company capable of orbital launches. "Vikram-1 Test Flight-1 has reached orbit... History is made," the company posted on X. The successful Vikram-1 launch will take Skyroot closer to its goal of offering what it calls a "cab service to space", where companies can hire a rocket "to ride to a unique location in the orbit to place a satellite or visit a space station". Skyroot Aerospace Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket inside the company's Infinity Campus in Hyderabad, IndiaSkyroot Aerospace The rocket was named after Vikram Sarabhai, regarded as the father of India's space programme The rocket - named after Vikram Sarabhai, who is called the father of India's space programme - is small and has the capacity to carry payloads of up to 350kg, Skyroot co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana told the BBC before the launch. Chandana says today, access to space remains "a major bottleneck, with satellite operators often waiting for months or even years for a launch opportunity" and that their venture expects to change that. He says Skyroot aims to cut long waits for satellite launches by offering dedicated missions for small payloads. Instead of sharing space on large rockets that fly on fixed schedules, customers can book a launch tailored to their satellite and its required orbit - much like taking a taxi instead of waiting for a train. "If you want to just go to a friend's house, you don't need a train, you book a cab, an Uber. What we are offering is a cab service to space, which can be used to ride to a unique location in the orbit to place a satellite or visit a station." Skyroot's model would appear similar to that of Rocket Lab in the US, which provides small-lift launch vehicles. The Indian test launch mission called Aagman - Sanskrit for arrival - has placed into orbit six payloads. They include scientific instruments such as a robotic arm for removing space debris, an Earth observation camera and satellites, including one from a German company.

World Cup 2026 Creates Big Financial Winners and Losers The 2026 FIFA World Cup is not only delivering unforgettable football moments but also generating billions of dollars across the global sports industry. With more teams, more matches, and millions of fans watching worldwide, the tournament has become one of the biggest sporting events ever held. While FIFA is enjoying record breaking revenue, many supporters are struggling with the rising cost of attending matches. FIFA Set to Earn Record Revenue FIFA is expected to become the biggest financial winner of the 2026 World Cup. After earning a record $7.6 billion from the 2022 tournament in Qatar, football's governing body is on track to surpass that figure during the competition hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, creating more matches, higher television audiences, and greater commercial opportunities. Experts believe FIFA's revenue across its current four year business cycle could approach $13 billion. The organization generates income through broadcasting rights, sponsorship agreements, hospitality packages, licensing deals, ticket sales, and its official ticket resale platform. FIFA also collects fees from buyers and sellers using its resale marketplace, adding another valuable source of income. Expansion Brings More Business Opportunities The larger tournament format has increased global interest in football. More participating nations attract new audiences, sponsors, and broadcasters. FIFA is even considering expanding future World Cups to 64 teams, which could bring additional countries such as China and India into the competition and further increase worldwide viewership. Fans Face Rising Costs While football supporters are creating lifelong memories, many are paying record prices to experience the tournament in person. Ticket prices have increased sharply, partly because of FIFA's dynamic pricing system, which raises prices when demand grows. This approach has received criticism from many fans who believe major sporting events should remain affordable. Even United States President Donald Trump said he would not pay the reported $1,000 ticket price for his country's opening match against Paraguay. The cost becomes even higher for the biggest matches. Official tickets for the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey reached $32,970, while some resale listings climbed above $2 million, making the final inaccessible for many football supporters. A Tournament That Rewards Business More Than Fans The expanded World Cup has created enormous financial opportunities for FIFA, broadcasters, sponsors, and commercial partners. At the same time, many loyal supporters face expensive tickets and travel costs that make attending matches increasingly difficult. As football continues to grow around the world, the challenge will be finding the right balance between commercial success and keeping the sport accessible for its fans.

US Hotels Fear Weak World Cup Tourism as Bookings Fall Short Tourism expectations fail to match reality US hotels are worried the upcoming World Cup will not deliver the expected tourism boost. Many host cities are reporting lower-than-expected bookings, raising doubts about the event’s economic impact. A report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association shows demand is falling behind forecasts across most locations. The group represents more than 32,000 hotel properties and a large share of franchised hotels in the United States. Conflict between booking data and ticket sales The association says hotel demand does not match FIFA’s claim that over five million tickets have already been sold. It warns that the expected financial gains from the tournament could be lower than projected. Accusations over hotel room block bookings The report also criticizes FIFA for reserving large numbers of hotel rooms in advance. According to the association, this created artificial demand and pushed prices higher in early stages of booking. Later, FIFA cancelled a significant portion of those reservations. Hotel operators say this left gaps in availability and disrupted normal pricing patterns. FIFA has rejected these claims and does not agree with the criticism. Other factors behind weak demand Hotels say several issues are discouraging visitors. High ticket prices for matches are one concern. Expensive local transport and taxes are also adding pressure. Some operators also point to political tensions as another reason international travel interest has slowed. Economic outlook remains uncertain With lower bookings and mixed signals from ticket sales, the hospitality sector is now unsure about the World Cup’s overall economic benefit. Many hotels are preparing for weaker-than-expected revenue during the tournament period.

Lauren Laverne Reveals Smouldering Myeloma Diagnosis, Says She Feels Well Television and radio presenter Lauren Laverne has shared that she has been diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, a rare blood and bone marrow disorder that can sometimes develop into blood cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she reassured fans that she currently feels well and does not need medical treatment. The 48 year old broadcaster explained that the condition has no symptoms in her case. Doctors will continue to monitor her health through regular blood tests, MRI scans, and bone marrow examinations. She also said that the chance of the condition progressing into blood cancer is considered low. A Condition Found During Routine Monitoring Lauren Laverne revealed that doctors discovered the disorder during routine medical monitoring following her previous cancer diagnosis. She said the condition is unrelated to her earlier illness or a recent surgery. According to Laverne, many people with smouldering myeloma never realize they have it because it often causes no symptoms. Cancer survivors are more likely to receive an early diagnosis because they usually undergo regular health checks. Living With a Chronic Blood Disorder Although there is currently no cure for smouldering myeloma, Laverne said she does not require treatment at this stage. However, she explained that the condition slightly weakens her immune system, making regular medical monitoring essential. She admitted that receiving another serious diagnosis within two years has been emotionally challenging. Even so, she remains positive and hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others facing similar health issues. Message About Early Detection Laverne praised her family doctor for investigating her ongoing low iron levels instead of dismissing them. She encouraged people to speak up about persistent health concerns and seek specialist advice if something does not feel right. She believes early diagnosis can make a significant difference and urged others to advocate for their own health by asking questions and requesting further tests when necessary. Taking a Short Break Before Returning The presenter said she plans to take a short holiday before returning to work as usual. She also sent her support to everyone living with similar conditions and thanked those who have supported her throughout her health journey. Her announcement has drawn widespread messages of encouragement from fans and colleagues, who wished her good health and a smooth recovery.

Jayson Gillham Loses Gaza Comments Case Against Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Acclaimed British Australian pianist Jayson Gillham has lost his workplace discrimination case against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) over comments he made about the Gaza war during a concert. The Federal Court ruled that the orchestra did not cancel his performance because of his political beliefs. Justice Graeme Hill said the decision was made because MSO wanted to manage possible damage to its reputation and business after the comments. Court Rules MSO Acted Over Reputation Concerns Gillham took legal action against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra after it cancelled his scheduled recital in August 2024. The cancellation happened shortly after he spoke about the deaths of Palestinian journalists during a Melbourne performance. During the concert, he introduced a five minute piece titled Witness, composed by Connor D'Netto and dedicated to journalists in Gaza. Gillham told the audience that more than 100 Palestinian journalists had been killed since the start of the Israel Gaza war in October 2023. He also accused Israel of carrying out targeted attacks against journalists. He said the killing of journalists was a war crime under international law and argued that such actions prevented the world from seeing evidence of possible war crimes. Judge Says Political Views Were Not the Reason Justice Graeme Hill rejected Gillham's claim that he faced discrimination because of his political views. The judge said the MSO had a policy of avoiding public support for either side in the Israel Gaza conflict. He also noted that classical musicians usually do not make political statements from the stage without approval from the event organiser. According to the ruling, the orchestra cancelled the recital because it believed the comments could negatively affect its public image and operations. Orchestra Later Called Cancellation an Error The MSO received three complaints following Gillham's remarks and decided to cancel his upcoming recital on 15 August 2024. The decision caused a strong public reaction, with almost 500 complaints being submitted against the cancellation. The orchestra later admitted that cancelling the performance was an error and attempted to arrange a new date for the event. During the trial, MSO argued that its stage was meant for musical performances rather than personal political statements. Gillham's legal team argued that he had the right to express his beliefs and should not face workplace consequences because of them. Gillham Responds After Court Decision Following the judgment, Gillham said he was disappointed and needed time to consider the decision before making further comments. The case lasted three weeks and included evidence from Gillham, MSO executives, and other witnesses. The ruling has renewed discussions about freedom of expression, political statements by artists, and the responsibilities of cultural organisations.

AI Designed Universal Coronavirus Vaccine Could Help Prevent Future Pandemics Researchers have achieved a major breakthrough in vaccine development by creating the world's first vaccine whose key component was designed entirely by artificial intelligence. Scientists believe this innovation could protect people from a wide range of coronavirus strains and help prevent future pandemics. The research team developed the vaccine to target not only current Covid variants but also animal coronaviruses that could potentially infect humans in the future. Although the project remains in its early stages, scientists are already applying the same technology to develop vaccines for influenza and Ebola. ## A New Approach to Vaccine Development Traditional vaccines usually target a specific virus strain. As viruses mutate over time, vaccine effectiveness can decrease, making regular updates necessary. To overcome this challenge, researchers used genetic information collected from different coronavirus strains identified through global surveillance programs. Artificial intelligence analyzed these genetic sequences and created a unique "super antigen" designed to provide broader protection. This approach helps the immune system recognize and respond to multiple coronavirus variants. It may even offer protection against future strains that have not yet emerged. ## How Artificial Intelligence Designed the Vaccine Scientists fed the AI system genetic data from numerous coronaviruses. The technology identified common features shared across the virus family and designed an antigen that could trigger a broad immune response. Antigens play a crucial role in vaccines because they teach the immune system what to attack when an infection occurs. Researchers say this marks the first time an AI generated antigen has been tested in human clinical trials. The results highlight how artificial intelligence can accelerate vaccine research and improve pandemic preparedness. ## Potential Protection Against Future Outbreaks Experts believe this technology could change how the world responds to infectious diseases. Instead of developing vaccines after an outbreak begins, scientists hope to create vaccines that protect against viruses before they spread widely. This proactive strategy could reduce the impact of future pandemics and improve global health security. By staying ahead of viral mutations, researchers aim to provide longer lasting protection against emerging threats. ## Expanding Beyond Coronavirus The success of this early research has encouraged scientists to explore similar vaccines for other dangerous diseases. Development efforts are already underway for influenza and Ebola vaccines using the same AI driven approach. If successful, this technology could transform vaccine development and help the world prepare more effectively for future health emergencies. ## Looking Ahead While further testing is needed, the early findings represent a significant step forward in medical science. Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in healthcare, and this breakthrough demonstrates its potential to create smarter, faster, and more effective vaccines for future generations.

Overview of the current situation

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have reported a drop in recorded Ebola cases. At first, officials warned of more than 1,000 suspected cases and nearly 250 suspected deaths.

Contents
Overview of the current situationConfirmed cases versus suspected casesWhy the numbers changedWorld Health Organization viewContact tracing challengesConclusion

Now the numbers look lower. About 380 confirmed cases and 60 deaths have been reported in the country. In nearby Uganda, officials confirmed 15 cases and one death.

Confirmed cases versus suspected cases

The fall in numbers does not mean the outbreak has slowed in a real sense. Earlier figures included suspected infections. Many of those patients were later tested and ruled out.

Health workers found that several people had other common illnesses such as malaria. This difference in reporting explains most of the drop in total figures.

Why the numbers changed

Better laboratory testing has helped separate real Ebola infections from other fever related illnesses. This has given a clearer picture of the outbreak.

Medical teams now rely more on confirmed results instead of early assumptions. This has reduced confusion in reporting but can make trends harder to interpret at first glance.

World Health Organization view

The World Health Organization says the outbreak had an early advantage in spreading before a full response was in place. However, response teams are now catching up as testing and tracking improve.

Contact tracing challenges

One major concern is contact tracing. Only about 45 percent of people who had close contact with patients are currently being monitored.

Conflict in parts of the affected region has made it harder for health workers to reach communities. This slows down efforts to stop further spread.

Conclusion

The drop in reported numbers should not be seen as an end to the outbreak. It mainly reflects improved testing and clearer reporting. The situation still needs close monitoring, especially where tracking of contacts remains weak.

Previous Article US Senate approves $70bn immigration funding package linked to Trump agencies Senate passes major immigration spending bill The US Senate has approved a funding package worth more than $70bn for immigration enforcement agencies under President Donald Trump’s administration. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for approval before reaching the president’s desk for signing. The vote passed 52 to 47, mostly along party lines. Only one Republican senator opposed it, joining Democrats in rejecting the measure during a long overnight session. Funding boost for ICE and Border Patrol A large share of the funding will go to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol. These agencies are central to Trump’s ongoing immigration enforcement agenda. If fully approved, the money will support operations for the remaining three years of the administration. Heated debate over controversial provisions The Senate session included an 18-hour amendment process known as a vote-a-rama. During this time, lawmakers introduced several changes, many of which failed. Democrats tried to restrict a proposed $1.8bn fund tied to claims of government overreach. Critics described it as a politically sensitive slush fund, while supporters defended its purpose. The proposal also faced controversy after acting Attorney General Todd Blanche suggested earlier in the week that the fund might be dropped. Trump later said the decision was not final and indicated legal review was still ongoing. Political divide and shutdown background Democrats previously refused to support ICE and Customs and Border Protection funding earlier this year. That standoff followed fatal shootings involving federal immigration officers in Minnesota and contributed to a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. Other budget changes Lawmakers also removed $1bn previously allocated for a planned White House ballroom from the spending package before the final vote. House vote next The bill now heads to the House of Representatives. If it passes there, it will go to President Trump for final approval.
