A personal health revelation
Jon Snow, who led Channel 4 News for 32 years, has revealed that he is living with Alzheimer’s disease. The veteran journalist is 78 years old. He shared his experience publicly through a documentary set to premiere next week.
He appears in the film alongside his wife, Precious Lunga. Together, they discuss how the diagnosis has affected their lives and how they are adjusting to it.
Snow said he initially wanted to keep his condition private because of stigma linked to mental decline. He explained that he struggled with how others might view him after the diagnosis.
Living with uncertainty and symptoms
Snow described the condition as something that does not affect him every moment of the day. He said there are times when symptoms appear, but they are not constant.
He also admitted that he sometimes questions the diagnosis itself. In conversation with broadcaster Kirsty Lang, he shared that he does not always feel sure about having Alzheimer’s and has moments of doubt.
Despite this, he says he does not feel disabled in daily life.
Medical journey and diagnosis
His wife, an epidemiologist, explained that he was reluctant to see a doctor at first. He eventually met a specialist in 2023.
He performed strongly in an initial cognitive test, scoring 29 out of 30 in a mini mental assessment. Later brain scans helped confirm the diagnosis.
This process shows how early testing may not always fully reflect underlying neurological changes.
Public response and awareness
Public figures and health organizations have responded to his announcement with support. The Alzheimer’s Society said his openness may help others feel less isolated and encourage earlier diagnosis.
Snow himself said he chose to speak publicly because he believes silence does not help others facing the same condition.
He continues to highlight the importance of awareness and better access to diagnosis and care.
