Health experts said on Thursday that malnutrition can lead to its own type of diabetes and called for “type 5 diabetes” to be recognized worldwide in order to combat the disease in nations that are already facing starvation and poverty.
Type 2 diabetes, the most prevalent kind, is brought on by adult insulin resistance and can be brought on by obesity. Type 1 is caused by insufficient insulin production by the pancreas and is typically diagnosed in childhood.
However, experts studying diabetes have been monitoring a different type of the condition that typically affects those under 30. Although less severe than type 1, it also impairs the synthesis of insulin.
Additionally, unlike type 2, it is not associated with being overweight or obese.
