According to officials, the goal of the pilot initiative is to make the city more livable for locals by discouraging tourists and reducing the number of people that swarm the canals during the busiest holiday season.
In front of the major train station and other points of entry, signs warning visiting guests of the new €5 fee (£4.28) for a test period of 29 days until July have been posted.
200 or so stewards have received training on how to gently guide guests who are ignorant of the fee through the procedure of obtaining a QR code; those without smartphones can use a dedicated kiosk.
Officers will randomly inspect everyone outside of the entry ports.
