Candidates who ran their campaigns opposing the new government’s position on Palestine won a total of five seats.
In addition to Shockat Adam winning in Leicester South, Ayoub Khan winning in Birmingham Perry Barr, Adnan Hussain winning in Blackburn, and Iqbal Mohamed winning in Dewsbury & Batley, this also includes Jeremy Corbyn holding onto his seat in Islington North.
And as he was proclaimed the victor in his north London constituency, incoming prime minister Sir Keir Starmer was heckled with calls for “free Palestine”.
Labour held notionally all five of these seats, accounting for changes in boundaries.
As a result, Jonathan Ashworth, a member of the shadow cabinet, was expelled from Leicester South.
With a mere 132 votes, Mr. Hussain became victorious in Blackburn, while Mr. Ashworth lost his seat by 979 votes.
Perry Barr of Birmingham became an independent on a vote count of 507 to 1.
The margins of victory for the other two seats were greater: Mr. Corbyn defeated the party he previously led by 7,247 votes, while Mr. Mohamed won Dewsbury & Batley by 6,934 votes.
