Sharjeel Inam Memon, the senior minister of Sindh, accused “illegal settlers” on Wednesday of causing Karachi’s street crimes, which claimed over ten lives during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
According to news reports, there were 6,780 street criminal incidences in Karachi in a single month, along with 20 car thefts and over 130 thefts. The study also stated that during Ramadan, 4,200 more motorcycles were stolen and 830 motorcycles were stolen.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan stated that the police recorded tens of thousands of street crimes in 2023, which resulted in the deaths of over a hundred persons. The commission also noted that the similar pattern was observed in the first quarter of 2024.

“Every attempt is being made by the Sindh administration to curb street crimes […] After the Eid ul Fitr prayers in Hyderabad, Memon informed reporters, “Illegal settlers are the reason behind street crime.”

In addition, Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi Imran Yaqoob Minhas disclosed that between 300,000 and 400,000 professional beggars travel to the city throughout the month of Ramadan in order to profit from the Eid season, amidst the unchecked surge in street crimes.
