Late on Tuesday, it became known that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) had filed a case against the planemaker, alleging that it had violated the terms of a 2021 agreement that exempted Boeing from prosecution for the crashes.
Then, Boeing consented to pay $2.5 billion to close the case over its behavior, recompense the families of the victims, and reform its compliance procedures.
The deferred prosecution agreement, as it was called, was scheduled to end in January of this year, but two days early, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 experienced a mid-air panel blowout.
Numerous agencies, including the Department of Justice, have conducted investigations into the blowout.
