Escalation of Violence in Southern Lebanon and Northern Israel
Israeli air strikes and Hezbollah rocket fire increased over the weekend across southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Both sides signaled that fighting would continue despite growing diplomatic activity.
The conflict has expanded since early March after renewed clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. Israel says its military campaign targets Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Hezbollah continues rocket attacks toward northern Israel in response.
Rising Civilian and Military Casualties
Lebanese health authorities report that Israeli strikes have killed 2055 people in Lebanon since fighting resumed on 2 March. They also say 167 people died since Friday.
Israel reports that Hezbollah attacks have killed 12 soldiers and 2 civilians during the same period.
Among recent civilian victims was a child, around two years old. She survived an earlier strike on her home in southern Lebanon. She later died when another strike hit during her father’s funeral. Her seven year old sister suffered severe burns and remains in hospital.
A Red Cross rescuer also died during weekend operations. The organization says a drone strike hit its team while they carried out a humanitarian mission. The Israeli military has not confirmed this claim.
Diplomatic Efforts and Upcoming Talks
Officials from Lebanon, Israel, and the United States plan to meet in Washington on Tuesday. Lebanese officials say the talks aim to set conditions for a ceasefire. If progress is made, formal negotiations may follow.
Lebanon continues to push for an end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal from its territory. Israel, however, states it will not negotiate a ceasefire with Hezbollah under current conditions.
Statements from Political Leaders
Lebanon’s prime minister said diplomatic efforts continue despite heavy fighting. He emphasized ongoing negotiations aimed at stopping the war.
Israel’s prime minister maintained a firm position while visiting troops in southern Lebanon. He said Israeli forces would continue operations in what he described as a security zone. Israel says this zone extends up to ten kilometers inside Lebanese territory to prevent attacks on Israeli communities.
Disputed Military Claims
Israeli forces claim they killed more than 20 Hezbollah fighters operating from a hospital area in Bint Jbeil. Lebanese authorities deny this and accuse Israel of striking civilians and medical facilities.
Heavy air strikes were also reported in multiple towns in southern Lebanon, including areas that saw major fighting during earlier conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah.
