Former federal prosecutor J.P. Cooney, who helped lead criminal cases against President Donald Trump alongside former Special Counsel Jack Smith, has announced his run for Congress as a Democrat in Virginia.
Cooney Enters the Race After DOJ Exit
Cooney shared the news Wednesday on X, explaining that Donald Trump’s Justice Department fired him because of his role in prosecuting the former president. However, he emphasized that this setback would not stop him from serving the public.
He aims to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional District and highlight accountability in government. Additionally, he said he wants to ensure stronger checks on executive power.
Republicans Push Back
The Republican National Committee quickly criticized Cooney’s candidacy. For example, RNC spokeswoman Emma Hall accused him of using the legal system for political purposes and claimed he wants to block Trump’s policies.
In contrast, Cooney has framed his campaign around integrity and service. This response illustrates the ongoing political divide surrounding the prosecutions of the former president.
Cooney’s Role in Trump Investigations
According to his LinkedIn profile, Cooney served as Principal Deputy to Special Counsel Jack Smith. In that role, he led the criminal prosecutions involving allegations of obstruction of justice and conspiracy tied to Trump.
Smith praised Cooney in a statement reported by The New York Times. He called Cooney a person of integrity who dedicates his career to defending the rule of law. Meanwhile, Smith added that Cooney represents the kind of leadership the country needs in public service.
Uncertain District Boundaries
Cooney plans to run in Virginia’s 7th District, but the district’s final boundaries remain unsettled. The New York Times noted that a redistricting proposal backed by Democrats could alter the district.
As a result, the plan must overcome legal challenges and win approval through a ballot referendum before it takes effect.
Focus on Congressional Oversight
Cooney expressed concerns about weak congressional oversight of the president. He said he worries about the direction of national leadership. Moreover, he believes that stronger checks on executive power are necessary.
Through his campaign, Cooney intends to emphasize government accountability, constitutional limits, and restoring public trust in federal institutions.
