Balendra Shah (also known as Balen) has been sworn in as Nepal’s prime minister following a massive election win. Balen’s rise is a sign of a major shift in Nepal’s political scene, a result of sweeping election victories.

Shah, 35 years old, has made the transition from musical stages to politics. He released a track of rap celebrating progress and unity before the inauguration. It was a hit, with over 2 million views in just a few hours. The song reflected the journey of his rise from an underground rapper to a national leader.

Rap Battles and National Leadership

Shah gained his first public recognition in 2013, after he won a major Nepalese rap competition. He spoke out about issues such as corruption and inequality that resonated deeply with the youth. Balidan is one of his best-known songs. It highlights ordinary people’s struggles and challenges the abuse of power.

Shah, who was born in Naradevi (Kathmandu), comes from humble beginnings. Shah studied engineering first in Nepal, then in India. He chose to use music, not his technical training, as a way of raising social awareness prior to entering politics.

A Political Revolution and the Public’s Support

Shah surprised many in 2022 when he won the Kathmandu mayor election as an Independent candidate. Shah defeated traditional candidates. He focused his efforts as Mayor on anti-corruption, city sanitation, and heritage preservation.

He launched a new campaign to combat illegal building. Shah later joined Rastriya Swatantra Party, a newer political party. He led his party to an overwhelming victory in the general election with the support of the public.

Youth Movements and Rise to Power

Shah’s popularity increased during protests in September last year. His song Nepal Haseko became the anthem of many protesters. The unrest in the country highlighted the discontent of the people, particularly the youth.

Shah’s reformist message and call for accountability was in line with protesters demands. The connection was crucial to his ascent to power.

Challenges Ahead

Questions remain despite his win.Shah will face his biggest challenge in managing expectations and bringing about real reforms. For many Nepalese his leadership still represents a fresh start.
