An avalanche near Truckee in California’s Lake Tahoe Region has taken nine skiers hostage. The search is dangerous due to the heavy snowfall.
Six Rescued After California Avalanche in Lake Tahoe
Six survivors were rescued later in the evening. The were transported safely to the hospital. Authorities told the remaining people to remain where they are and protect themselves against weather conditions.
High Avalanche Warning Issued in Lake Tahoe Region
It rated it as a high danger, or four out five. The center advised that people avoid the backcountry.
Steve Reynaud, a meteorologist in Quebec City, said that the slide measured 2,5 on the D-scale. The scale ranges between one and five. This size of slide can seriously hurt or bury people.
Severe Snowstorm Worsens California Avalanche Conditions
The unstable snow in this area is still a danger to rescuers. Reports indicate that survivors protected themselves from the cold by using tarps.
The search will start as soon as crews arrive at the area.
