France’s top-grossing restaurant isn’t a Michelin-starred bistro or a Parisian landmark. It’s Les Grands Buffets, an all-you-can-eat buffet on the outskirts of Narbonne. For €67.50 (£58.74) per person, diners enjoy everything from pressed duck to truffles. Over the years, it has become a must-visit destination for French food lovers.
Arriving at a simple carpark near a McDonald’s in southern France, I didn’t expect to witness a grand culinary spectacle. As Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries played, a server appeared with a roasted duck held above a flame. He presented it to diners, introducing the ritual of canard au sang, a 19th-century tradition.Les Grands Buffets serves pressed duck at every lunch and dinner, making it unique in the country.
The Largest Buffet in the World
“Les Grands Buffets” literally means “The Big Buffets.” True to its name, it’s an all-you-can-eat restaurant that holds the world record for the most varieties of cheese in a single restaurant: 111.All of this comes at a fixed price of €67.50 (£58.78/$79.17).
Founded in 1989 by Louis and Jane Privat, the restaurant quickly became a French dining landmark. With a 2025 revenue of €30m (£26m/$34.8m), it’s France’s highest-earning restaurant.
Combining Tradition with Accessibility
Louis Privat explained that the all-you-can-eat model was unheard of in France at the time. Inspired by Club Med buffets and his passion for the concept, he knew it would resonate with the French public. Les Grands Buffets combines all-inclusive dining with pride in classic French cuisine.
“Our chefs focus on traditional recipes,” Privat said. From tripe to Provençal daube and escargots, nearly every dish is drawn from Auguste Escoffier’s Le Guide Culinaire. In 2024, Privat and executive chef Philippe Munos were recognized as disciples of Escoffier.
Luxury Ingredients at a Buffet
Visiting Les Grands Buffets isn’t just a meal; it’s a culinary pilgrimage, blending spectacle, tradition, and indulgence in a way few restaurants can.
