Actor Mark Hamill faced backlash after sharing an AI generated image on Bluesky that showed US President Donald Trump appearing in a shallow grave. The image included a caption that said “if only” and depicted a headstone reading “Donald J. Trump 1946 to 2024”.
Hamill, known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise and voicing the Joker in several DC projects, later removed the post. He also issued an apology, saying he did not intend to wish harm and only meant to express strong political criticism.
White House reaction
The White House reacted strongly to the post and described Hamill as “one sick individual”. Officials also accused what they called radical left rhetoric of contributing to a toxic political environment.
They linked this kind of language to past threats against political figures, arguing that extreme statements can escalate tensions in an already divided climate.
Hamill response and clarification
After deleting the post, Hamill clarified his intent. He stated that he was not wishing death on the president. Instead, he said he wanted Trump to live long enough to face political consequences, legal accountability, and public judgment over his actions.
His original message also referenced corruption claims and expressed hope that Trump would be held responsible through legal and political processes.
Wider political tension in the US
The controversy comes at a time of heightened political tension in the United States. Separately, past incidents involving political violence and public commentary have led to renewed scrutiny of how celebrities and media personalities express political opinions.
Reports also mention previous security incidents involving political events and public gatherings, which have further fueled discussions about safety and political rhetoric in the country.
