A senior professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has died after a shooting at his home, according to police and university officials. The killing has deeply unsettled the MIT community and prompted a full homicide investigation.
What Happened
The victim, Nuno F. Gomes Loureiro, was 47 and taught nuclear science and engineering at MIT. Born in Portugal, he lived in an apartment in Brookline, Massachusetts, where the shooting took place.
On Monday evening, shortly after 8:30 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire at the residence. Paramedics transported Loureiro to a Boston hospital. Doctors treated him for multiple gunshot wounds, but he died the following morning.

So far, police have not taken anyone into custody. The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said investigators are handling the case as an active homicide.
