Tragic incident during public show in Popayán
Three people lost their lives and dozens were injured after a monster truck crashed into a crowd during a public event in Popayán, Cauca, in southern Colombia on Sunday.
Officials believe a mechanical fault caused the accident when the truck’s brakes failed during the performance.
Eyewitness video shows panic as the vehicle broke through a barrier and rushed into spectators before hitting an electricity pole and stopping.
Victims and injuries reported
Local authorities confirmed at least 38 people were injured in the incident.
A 10 year old girl died at the scene, according to city officials and local media reports.
Several injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some remain in serious condition.
Driver condition and early findings
Police said the driver survived and is currently in stable condition.
Popayán police commander Colonel Julián Castañeda stated that early findings point to a brake failure.
He explained that the truck accelerated uncontrollably and the driver could not stop it in time.
Investigation launched by authorities
City officials have promised a full and transparent investigation into the incident.
Mayor Juan Carlos Muñoz Bravo said the authorities will carefully examine how the accident happened and why safety barriers failed to protect the crowd.
Regional governor Octavio Guzmán expressed support for the victims and their families, calling the event a major tragedy for the region.
