Incident in a busy neighbourhood
A shooting in Montreal on Monday left three people dead, including a police officer, a civilian, and the attacker. One other officer suffered serious injuries but is now in stable condition.
The violence took place in Côte des Neiges, a diverse area of the city. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing a gun pointed from a window. One local resident said he rushed to hide inside a nearby restaurant after hearing the shots and later saw the attacker moving in military style clothing.
Police response and suspect details
Quebec’s public security minister said investigators are still trying to understand why the attack happened. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also alerted police forces across Canada after reports of a document circulating online that encouraged violence against officers.
Officer killed in the line of duty
Montreal police identified the officer killed as 34 year old Mohamed Lamine Benredouane. He joined the force in 2021.
Police leadership described the situation as deeply traumatic, calling it one of the darkest moments for the force in recent years.
Ongoing investigation
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the suspect’s background and possible motives. Officials say more details will be released as the inquiry develops.
