New Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are launching in the West Midlands to equip people with the skills needed for high-demand medical technology roles. These include work on AI-powered health devices, wearable tech, imaging, and diagnostic tools.
Colleges, universities, and private training providers will offer the courses, created in partnership with West Midlands Combined Authority, Skills England, Pearson, and local employers.
The Association of British HealthTech Industries estimates the sector will need 70,000 additional workers by 2035, alongside 75,000 replacements. The West Midlands is home to major innovation hubs such as Birmingham Health Innovation Campus, Knowledge Quarter, and the West Midlands Health-Tech Accelerator.
West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker said the qualifications will help residents access high-quality jobs in the region. Phil Smith, chair of Skills England, called MedTech “the future” and highlighted that these qualifications will help fill skills gaps and boost NHS productivity.
