Pakistan has emerged as one of the most budget-friendly countries for public transportation, ranking 5th globally for affordability, according to a 2025 study by an Australian research firm. The report analyzed fares across 123 countries and 319 cities, highlighting the stark contrast in costs worldwide.

While Iceland claims the top spot for the most expensive public transport, with a one-way ticket costing around Rs 1,365 and a monthly pass priced at Rs 22,660, Pakistan offers a significantly lower rate. Pakistani commuters pay an average of Rs 46 for a single ride and roughly Rs 1,800 for a monthly pass, making daily travel extremely economical.

Other high-cost countries include Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, with the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Finland also ranking among the priciest. On the flip side, countries like Luxembourg (which offers free transport), Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Pakistan provide some of the world’s most affordable commuting options.

Experts say Pakistan’s public transport remains highly accessible for the general population, unlike Europe, where expensive fares can significantly strain household budgets.
