With injured people overflowing hospitals on the island of Cebu and workers carrying dozens of body bags away in the chaotic aftermath, the death toll from Wednesday’s strong earthquake in the central Philippines has risen to over 60.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the shallow magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred Tuesday at 9:59 p.m. (1359 GMT) off the northern end of the island, close to the 90,000-person city of Bogo.
As they were treated on cots spread out under blue tents in the driveway of the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo, injured youngsters wailed and parents screamed.
Since hundreds of aftershocks shook the area overnight, they had been wheeled out of the building out of concern for additional damage.
