ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that lasting peace in the region hinges on Afghanistan taking action against militant groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), operating from its soil.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference on Tuesday, the PM highlighted that a stable Afghanistan is crucial for regional connectivity, economic growth, and prosperity.
He recalled Pakistan’s challenges both at home and abroad, stressing the nation’s consistent commitment to peace. Referring to India’s “unprovoked aggression” in May, he praised Pakistan’s armed forces for their swift and decisive response that safeguarded the country’s sovereignty. “Having secured victory in war, our focus must now be on achieving lasting peace through genuine and constructive efforts,” he added.
Prime Minister Sharif warned that militant outfits continue to threaten security within Afghanistan and across borders. Speaking about last month’s attacks on Pakistani border posts, he said Pakistan’s response was “firm and decisive,” sending a clear message to those targeting the country.
TürkiyeHe also acknowledged the mediation efforts of Qatar and Turkiye in facilitating talks with the Afghan Taliban, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to peace and regional stability.
These remarks come amid a suspension in bilateral talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif recently confirmed that there is currently “no schedule for the fourth round of talks” following the third round in Istanbul, which aimed to ease tensions after deadly border clashes. Asif expressed gratitude to Türkiye and Qatar for their mediation efforts, though he admitted the facilitators had eventually lost hope in reviving dialogue.
