Brutal Attack in Essex Hotel
A woman from London has been sentenced to life in prison after murdering her partner in a hotel room in Essex. Polly Murphy, 42, attacked James Self, 47, at a hotel in Hartley Brook Road, Clacton-on-Sea, on 8 November 2023. Self died six weeks later from his injuries.
Delay in Calling for Help
Murphy waited 18 hours before calling an ambulance and falsely told paramedics that Self might have only broken his leg. Text messages shown in court revealed Murphy’s attempts to control her partner through verbal, psychological, and physical abuse.
Court Sentencing and Family Statement
Chelmsford Crown Court sentenced Murphy to life in prison, requiring her to serve a minimum of 15 years. In court, Self’s mother, Ashe, spoke about the devastating impact of losing her son. She described the abuse he suffered as “utterly unimaginable” and expressed gratitude to everyone who supported James and believed his voice.
Police Investigation
Detective Anthony Kopf, from the Essex and Kent Serious Crime Directorate, said officers spent two years investigating the case. He emphasized that domestic abuse can affect anyone, including men, and encouraged victims to seek help without shame.
Raising Awareness About Domestic Abuse
This case highlights the severe consequences of domestic abuse and the need for awareness and early intervention. Experts urge friends, family, and authorities to act quickly when they suspect abuse, as timely action could save lives.
