Pentagon to Review Senator Mark Kelly’s Comments on US Weapon Stockpiles Hegseth Questions Kelly’s Statements on Military Munitions US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered a Pentagon review after Democratic Senator Mark Kelly spoke publicly about America’s military weapon stockpiles during a television interview. The issue has sparked a political clash over national security, classified information, and military readiness. During an interview on CBS News’ Face The Nation, Kelly expressed concern about the condition of US munitions reserves following the recent conflict with Iran. He said he was surprised by how much the US had reduced its military stockpiles during the war effort. Kelly referred to a Pentagon briefing that discussed specific munitions and replenishment timelines. His comments quickly drew criticism from Hegseth, who accused the senator of publicly discussing sensitive military information. Pentagon Asked to Review Possible Disclosure In a post on X, Hegseth questioned whether Kelly had violated his oath by revealing details from a Pentagon briefing. He criticized the senator for discussing the matter on national television and called for an official review of the comments. Kelly strongly rejected the accusation. He responded by saying the information was already discussed publicly during a Senate hearing held the previous week. The Arizona senator also shared a video clip from the hearing, pointing out that Hegseth himself had acknowledged it could take years to rebuild certain US weapon stockpiles. Kelly argued that his comments did not expose classified material. He added that the American public deserves transparency about the cost of military operations and the long term impact on US defense readiness. Legal Dispute Between Kelly and Pentagon Continues The latest controversy comes as tensions continue between Kelly and the Pentagon leadership. Earlier this year, Kelly filed a lawsuit against the government after Hegseth allegedly attempted to demote him for criticizing the Trump administration. The legal battle began after Kelly and five other lawmakers released a video in November encouraging US service members to refuse unlawful military orders. Pentagon officials later challenged the lawmakers’ actions, leading to a broader political and legal dispute. In February, a federal judge temporarily blocked the Pentagon from carrying out the proposed demotion while the lawsuit moved forward. However, the Pentagon appealed the ruling. Recently, a federal appeals court appeared likely to reject the Pentagon’s effort to punish Kelly over his remarks to service members. If the court rules against the Pentagon, it would mark another setback for the Trump administration in its ongoing dispute with the senator. Debate Over National Security and Transparency The disagreement has fueled debate in Washington over how much information elected officials should share about military preparedness. Supporters of Kelly say lawmakers have a responsibility to discuss defense concerns openly, especially when military operations affect national resources. Critics, however, argue that public discussions involving weapons inventories and defense capabilities could risk exposing sensitive national security information. The Pentagon has not confirmed whether a formal investigation has officially started. Officials have only referred back to Hegseth’s public statements regarding the matter.

The Fátima Prophecies and the “Miracle of the Sun” That Shaped Cold War Beliefs Three Children Claimed They Saw a Divine Vision in Portugal In May 1917, three young shepherd children from Fátima, Portugal, claimed they witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary while tending sheep in a field. The children, Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marta, said the glowing figure appeared near an oak tree and instructed them to return on the 13th day of each month for the next five months. Their story quickly spread across Portugal and attracted thousands of believers. Over time, the reported visions became one of the most discussed religious events of the 20th century. Many people believed the messages contained warnings about war, faith, and the future of Russia under communism. The “Miracle of the Sun” Drew Thousands of Witnesses On 13 October 1917, a massive crowd gathered in Fátima to witness the final predicted appearance. Many people later claimed they saw extraordinary events in the sky. Witnesses described the Sun changing colors, spinning rapidly, and moving like a wheel of fire. Some also reported seeing flower-like shapes falling from the sky. Others believed people with illnesses were suddenly healed during the event. One witness recalled that the Sun appeared to spin faster and faster before returning to its normal position. While many people considered it a miracle, others suggested it may have been a natural atmospheric event or a case of mass psychological influence. Despite the debate, the event left a strong emotional impact on those who attended. Fear, faith, and wonder spread through the crowd as people tried to understand what they had seen. The Three Secrets of Fátima The children claimed they received three important revelations during the apparitions. These became known as the “Three Secrets of Fátima.” The first secret reportedly included a vision of Hell and warnings about future suffering and war. Many believers later connected it to the outbreak of World War II. The second prophecy focused on Russia. According to the message, devotion and prayer could eventually save Russia from communism. Because the message emerged shortly before the Russian Revolution, it later gained major attention during the Cold War. The third secret remained hidden inside the Vatican archives for decades. Its secrecy created worldwide speculation and increased global interest in Fátima. Many people believed it predicted major political and religious events of the 20th century. How Fátima Became Linked to Anti Communist Beliefs As communism spread across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union grew stronger, the Fátima prophecies became closely tied to anti communist movements. Religious groups viewed the messages as spiritual warnings against atheism and Soviet ideology. Although the Catholic Church initially reacted cautiously to the reports, it officially approved devotion connected to Fátima in 1930. From that point forward, the site became one of the world’s most visited religious pilgrimage destinations. Today, the story of Fátima continues to spark debate between believers, historians, and scientists. Some see it as a powerful spiritual event, while others view it as a historical mystery shaped by faith and human emotion.

Third British National Suspected of Hantavirus on MV Hondius Cruise as Cases Rise Outbreak Overview on MV Hondius Health officials are monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. A third British national is now suspected to have the infection. The case involves a passenger currently on the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha after the ship made a stop there in mid April. Two other British men already have confirmed infections. One patient remains in a stable condition in the Netherlands after evacuation from the ship. The second patient is in intensive care in South Africa following an earlier medical transfer. One passenger has died, and the total number of confirmed cases has reached five. Confirmed and Suspected Cases Authorities confirmed that the suspected third British case is under observation and has not yet been fully diagnosed. Two additional British nationals are self isolating at home in the United Kingdom. They show no symptoms and are isolating voluntarily after possible exposure. A group of 30 passengers from around a dozen countries disembarked earlier at St Helena on 24 April. Seven of them were British citizens. Four British passengers who left the ship remain on St Helena and continue to show no symptoms while staying in contact with health teams. Evacuation and Medical Response Medical teams evacuated three patients from the ship earlier in the week. Martin Anstee, a 56 year old retired police officer and expedition guide, was flown to the Netherlands along with a 41 year old Dutch crew member and a 65 year old German passenger. He is currently in stable condition and reports that he feels well. Health authorities plan to send medical support to remote island locations where exposed passengers are being monitored. Teams are focusing on early detection and containment to prevent further spread. Passenger Monitoring and Isolation Measures Passengers who remain on board the MV Hondius will be flown back to the United Kingdom via a chartered aircraft once the ship reaches the Canary Islands. Officials confirmed that all returning passengers will need to isolate after arrival, even if they show no symptoms. Health monitoring continues for all exposed individuals across multiple locations, including Europe, Africa, and remote Atlantic islands. Operator Response and Contact Tracing The cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions stated that the first confirmed infection was reported on 4 May. The company also confirmed that all passengers who had disembarked were contacted and informed about potential exposure risks.

Three Killed After Mount Dukono Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Deadly Eruption Hits Mount Dukono During Hiking Trip At least three hikers lost their lives after Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning in Indonesia. The volcano sent a huge column of ash nearly 10 kilometers into the sky, creating panic among hikers and nearby residents. The victims were part of a group of 20 hikers from Singapore and Indonesia who were climbing the volcano despite safety restrictions issued by local authorities. Rescue teams later evacuated the remaining members of the group and shifted them to nearby hospitals for treatment and medical checks. Officials confirmed that two Singaporean men, aged 27 and 30, died in the incident along with a local woman from Ternate. Rescue workers have not yet recovered the bodies because continuous eruptions and dangerous terrain are slowing the operation. Rescue Operation Faces Major Challenges Local police and rescue teams said strong volcanic blasts and falling ash have made it difficult to reach the crater area where the victims are believed to be located. Authorities temporarily stopped the recovery mission after nightfall and plan to continue the search on Saturday morning. Two porters from the hiking group stayed behind on the mountain to support rescue workers during the operation. Witnesses near the volcano reported that Mount Dukono continued releasing hot ash and volcanic material throughout Friday afternoon. A local resident helping rescuers said ash clouds and rocks were still coming out from the crater area for several hours after the eruption. Officials remain concerned because the volcano has shown continuous activity in recent months. Authorities Had Already Warned Hikers Indonesian authorities had repeatedly warned people not to climb Mount Dukono because of increased volcanic activity. The volcano has erupted more than 200 times since March last year, making it one of the country’s most active volcanoes. One hiking guide present during the eruption said pressure inside the volcano had likely been building for several days. He described Friday’s eruption as extremely powerful and dangerous. Eyewitnesses also reported that several other hikers were on the mountain when the eruption happened. Officials are now investigating how visitors managed to enter the restricted area despite safety warnings. Indonesia’s Volcano Risks Remain High Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country has more than 120 active volcanoes, and authorities regularly monitor volcanic activity to reduce risks for local communities and tourists. The latest Mount Dukono tragedy highlights the dangers of ignoring official safety warnings near active volcanoes. Rescue operations are expected to continue until all victims are recovered from the mountain.

Hantavirus Outbreak Reported on Atlantic Cruise Ship Incident Overview Health authorities have reported a serious hantavirus situation on a cruise ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, MV Hondius operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde when multiple passengers fell ill. Three people have died during the incident. A Dutch married couple and a German passenger were among the deceased. Officials have confirmed two hantavirus cases so far, including a Dutch woman who later died after leaving the ship. Investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the remaining deaths. Two crew members also developed breathing related symptoms while on board. One showed mild illness and the other required urgent medical attention. What Is Hantavirus Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses carried mainly by rodents. Humans usually become infected when they breathe in particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This virus does not typically spread from person to person. Infection usually happens in environments where rodent activity is present and contaminated dust becomes airborne. People may also get infected through rodent bites or scratches, but this is less common. How the Virus Spreads The main transmission route involves inhalation of infected particles in the air. When dried rodent waste is disturbed, it can release virus particles into the environment. Risk increases in enclosed or poorly cleaned areas where rodents live or have lived. Travel environments, storage areas, or remote locations can increase exposure risk if rodent control is weak. Symptoms and Health Risks Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome This form affects the lungs. Early signs include fever, fatigue, and muscle pain. As the illness progresses, patients may experience headaches, dizziness, chills, and stomach discomfort. Breathing problems can develop suddenly. In severe cases, the condition becomes life threatening. Health data shows a high death rate once respiratory symptoms begin. Hemorrhagic Fever with Kidney Complications This form affects the kidneys and blood vessels. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, bleeding inside the body, and kidney failure. It can become severe without fast medical care. Current Cases Under Investigation A 69 year old British passenger is currently in intensive care in South Africa and has tested positive for hantavirus. The Dutch woman who died after leaving the ship also tested positive. Health officials are still testing crew members who showed respiratory symptoms. Results have not yet confirmed whether they are infected with the virus.

Robots Step In as Waste Industry Struggles to Hire Staff Recycling Plant Faces Labour Shortage Challenges A busy recycling facility in Rainham, East London, is dealing with ongoing staff shortages in a tough working environment. The site is operated by Sharp Group, a family run waste management company. The plant processes around 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling every year. Workers sort materials on fast moving conveyor belts where items like shoes, broken electronics, and construction waste pass by constantly. The job is physically demanding and noisy. Dust is present throughout the facility, making conditions even harder for staff. Safety risks are also a concern in this sector, which reports higher injury and illness rates compared to many other industries. High Turnover Continues to Pressure Operations Keeping staff has become a major challenge. The facility reports an annual turnover rate of around 40 percent. Line supervisor Ken Dordoy explains that many workers struggle with the pace. He notes that pickers are constantly working as the belt never stops for long, which leads to frequent staff replacements. To manage fatigue, workers rotate between different sorting tasks every short interval, and the belt is occasionally paused to give brief breaks. Robots Enter Recycling Workflows To address staffing issues, the company is testing automation. A humanoid robot called Alpha is being trained to assist with sorting waste. The robot has been developed by RealMan Robotics in China and is being adapted for recycling operations by TeknTrash Robotics in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional industrial machines, this robot is designed to move in a human like way. Developers believe this approach allows it to work within existing facilities without major redesigns. Training the Robot to Sort Waste Alpha is still in early development and is undergoing training. It is learning how to identify different items on the conveyor belt and how to pick them up correctly. A worker uses a virtual reality headset to demonstrate sorting techniques. These movements are recorded to help train the robot. According to TeknTrash founder and chief executive Al Costa, the training process focuses on two main skills. The first is recognising materials on the belt. The second is learning how to handle and lift them safely and efficiently.

Met Gala Looks Inspired by Famous Artworks The Met Gala is known for turning fashion into a form of living art. Held every year on the first Monday of May, it celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” encouraged guests to express their personal connection between clothing and artistic expression. Celebrities arrived in bold, creative outfits that reflected famous artworks from history. Each look told a visual story shaped by painters, sculptors, and cultural symbols. Rosé Channels Georges Braque’s “The Birds” Rosé, member of Blackpink and a New Zealand born singer, wore a simple yet elegant black strapless gown designed by Saint Laurent under Anthony Vaccarello. The dress appeared minimal at first glance, but the inspiration behind it added depth and meaning. Her outfit took cues from Georges Braque’s artwork The Birds (1952–53). The design included a striking bird shaped brooch, which became the highlight of her look. This detail directly connected the outfit to Braque’s artistic style and symbolism. Rosé worked closely with stylist Law Roach, often called an “image architect,” to shape the final concept. Together, they studied Saint Laurent’s past collections, including designs from spring 1998 and spring 2002 couture. During this process, they discovered how Yves Saint Laurent frequently used bird motifs, which helped refine the final direction. She later shared that the look combined classic Saint Laurent elegance with artistic storytelling inspired by fashion history and fine art. How Art Shaped the Met Gala Theme The Met Gala theme encouraged designers and celebrities to treat fashion as more than clothing. Instead, outfits became interpretations of paintings, sculptures, and historical references. Each look aimed to reflect the human body as an artistic subject across different eras. From bold symbolism to subtle references, the red carpet became a space where art history and modern fashion blended together.

Olympic women's sport limited to biological females

IOC announced in a statement that women’s sports will only be open to female biologicals starting with the Los Angeles Olympics of 2028. The IOC will determine eligibility through a once-in-a lifetime sex-test, which prevents transgender women or athletes with differences of sexual development from participating in the female categories.

The New Rules of EligibilityPrevious Practices and ControversiesReactions, Debate and DiscussionThe IOC’s DecisionThe Wider Impact

The New Rules of Eligibility

Kirsty Cventry, IOC president, stressed that safety and fairness are key goals. Even the slightest margins of victory can determine a winner or loser. She said that biological males competing in events for women would be unfair and unsafe in certain sports.

The IOC uses the SRY test to detect the male-specific gene. The SRY gene is not present in the DNA of female athletes who test negative. Athletes who test positive for the SRY gene can still compete in mixed/open or male categories.

Previous Practices and Controversies

The IOC had previously left the sex-eligibility rules up to each sport. Tokyo 2020 will see the debut of transgender athletes, such as New Zealander Laurel Hubbard. By Paris 2024 however, there were fewer transgender athletes participating due to bans on several sports.

IOC’s new policy restricts DSD-affected athletes with the exception of complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS) which stops male puberty.

Reactions, Debate and Discussion

They argue that the genetic test ensures fairness, without forcing athletes to use hormones. The tests are invasive and can lead to false positives. They also violate the human rights of those who take them.

The IOC’s Decision

IOC analyzed scientific data for over 18 months. They consulted more than 1,100 athletes and spoke to competitors from around the world. The IOC concluded that the male gender provides an advantage to athletes in sports that rely on power, strength and endurance.

Coventry also stressed the respect for dignity of this process, which will only allow one screening per lifetime, as well as expert advice and counseling.

The Wider Impact

Athletes who have gone through the male puberty are already banned from participating in women’s categories by several sports federations.

These moves were influenced by legal rulings such as the UK Supreme Court’s definition of women based on biological sex.

Tests are not retroactive and the new IOC policy doesn’t apply to recreational or grassroots sports.

Previous Article Middle East Conflict Forces Global Aviation Rethink The Desert Stopover as a Global Hub Dubai began as an overnight stopover for flying boats travelling from the UK towards India and Australia. In the 1960s its desert runway served primarily as a refueling area. Dubai International Airport is a global landmark. By 2024, more than 92 millions passengers will have passed through the airport's halls. This is higher than London Heathrow, which had 83. Qatar and the UAE also host major hubs. Abu Dhabi and Doha handled approximately 87 millions passengers together last year. These airports are usually able to manage more than 3,000 flights per day, mostly operated by Emirates and Qatar Airways. Airspace and fuel disruptions Aviation industry has been hit hard by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The closure of airspace left thousands of planes grounded, and thousands more passengers stranded. Iran's blocking of the Strait of Hormuz led to jet fuel shortages. Fuel prices in Europe have increased by about 50%, largely due to the Gulf, which supplies half of Europe's fuel. Some airlines are now forced to reduce flights because they cannot afford it. Experts worry that the Gulf aviation model will be affected in the long-term by these issues. All parties involved may be affected, including airlines, regional businesses, and passengers. Chaos at the Airport First US-Israeli attacks on Iran, in February of this year, caused widespread disruption. Some aircraft in flight had to return. In Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, tens of thousands were stuck, as drones and missiles increased tensions. The government and the airlines were scrambling to react. Qatar Airways, Etihad, Emirates, and other airlines resumed some limited flights. Several countries also chartered aircraft to transport their citizens. Analysts estimate that over 30,000 Middle East flights have been cancelled since the conflict started. Traveler Confidence is at Risk Gulf hubs are being reconsidered by many passengers. Ian Scott had to return to Melbourne via Doha and spend days in the desert before he could catch a new flight. The man says that he avoids Gulf flights, for fear of further instability. It is a concern for hubs. In these airports, more than half the travelers only use them to connect with other flights and do not stay in city. Dubai has 47% connecting passengers, while Abu Dhabi is 54% and Doha 74%. Gulf Aviation Model Gulf's model combines point-topoint comfort with efficiency. The model allows travelers to go from Boston to Bali, or Amsterdam to Antananarivo in one stop. This model is heavily dependent on the geography of the area and its reputation for smooth and reliable connections. Now, disruption threatens to undermine this unique advantage. Keir Starmer Faces Growing Pressure as Labour Leadership Crisis Deepens Labour MPs Push for Change After Election Losses British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing one of the toughest moments of his political career as pressure inside the Labour Party continues to grow. Several Labour MPs and ministers are now openly questioning his leadership after the party suffered major losses in recent elections across the UK. The political situation intensified after three government ministers resigned from their posts. Among them was Jess Phillips, whose departure added fresh pressure on Starmer’s government. Other resignations from ministerial aides have also increased concerns about unity within the party. Cabinet Divisions Continue to Grow During a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer made it clear that he does not plan to step down as Labour leader or prime minister. He reportedly challenged critics inside the party to formally launch a leadership contest if they want to replace him. Despite criticism from many MPs, some senior ministers still publicly support Starmer. Housing Secretary Steve Reed and Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden both confirmed they continue to back his leadership. However, political observers noticed that Health Secretary Wes Streeting avoided commenting on the crisis as he left Downing Street. Many Labour members view him as a possible future leadership contender. At the same time, Foreign Office Minister Jenny Chapman admitted discussions about Starmer’s future are taking place inside government circles. Still, she said no cabinet minister directly challenged him during the meeting. More Than 80 MPs Call for Starmer to Quit The rebellion inside Labour has continued to grow. Reports suggest more than 80 Labour MPs have either demanded Starmer’s resignation or urged him to announce a timeline for leaving office. Senior figures, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, are also said to be encouraging the prime minister to consider an exit plan. Meanwhile, another group of more than 100 Labour MPs signed a statement asking colleagues to avoid a damaging leadership battle. They urged party members to remain focused on governing instead of creating more instability. Election Defeats Triggered the Crisis The current crisis began after Labour suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections last week. The party reportedly lost nearly 1,500 council seats across England. Labour also lost power in Wales and recorded its worst-ever performance in the Scottish Parliament elections. Those disappointing results raised serious concerns about Starmer’s popularity and leadership strategy ahead of future national elections. Political tensions also increased after criticism surrounding Starmer’s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as the UK ambassador to the United States. Some Labour MPs questioned whether the move reflected poor political judgment. Possible Successors Already Being Discussed As pressure continues to rise, several names are being discussed as possible replacements for Starmer if a leadership contest begins. Alongside Wes Streeting, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is considered one of the strongest potential challengers within the Labour Party. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also has support among some Labour members. However, he would first need to become an MP before officially entering a leadership race. For now, Starmer remains in office, but growing resignations, internal divisions, and election setbacks continue to place his leadership under intense pressure.
