The News said Sunday that serious concerns have been raised over purported inconsistencies and transparency in contracts pertaining to the Sindh Solar Energy initiative (SSEP), the main initiative of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
200,000 solar household systems were to be distributed in the project’s first phase, which was financed by Rs28 billion from the World Bank. Each solar kit was reported to cost $151 by a foreign manufacturer, but import records showed that the real cost was less than $50.
Additionally, solar DC fans were to be imported by the overseas company. But in place of them, fans made in Pakistan were distributed by falsifying import paperwork, and taxes and duties were claimed using purportedly forged import paperwork.
