What “Released Under Investigation” Means
Prince Andrew, also known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, has been released under investigation after police arrested him on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Thames Valley Police questioned him on Thursday and later allowed him to leave custody without imposing any conditions.
When police release someone under investigation, that person does not face bail rules. There are no curfews, travel limits, or reporting requirements. However, the investigation continues. Officers can call him back for further questioning if needed.
Police would have followed standard custody procedures. They likely recorded his fingerprints, took a DNA sample, and captured a custody photo. Officers also ensured he was fit to be detained. During his time in custody, he would have had access to legal advice and basic facilities at the station.
Ongoing Police Searches at Royal Lodge
Police confirmed they carried out searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk. Searches in Norfolk have now ended. However, officers are still searching Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park.
Unmarked police vehicles were seen near the Sandringham Estate before the arrest. Andrew has been staying there while renovation work takes place at another property.
Former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent Dal Babu said an arrest allows officers to seize devices, documents, and other potential evidence. Police can search any property a suspect owns or controls if they believe it holds relevant material.
Why Was Prince Andrew Arrested?
Thames Valley Police arrested Andrew at around 08:00 GMT on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The arrest followed a complaint linked to the alleged sharing of confidential material with Jeffrey Epstein.
Police have not disclosed the full details of the allegations. They are investigating whether any misconduct in public office occurred. This marks the first time Andrew has faced arrest in connection with his long standing links to Epstein.
Reports suggest neither King Charles nor Buckingham Palace received prior notice of the arrest.
What Happens Next?
Investigators will now review the evidence gathered during searches and questioning. At some stage, the Crown Prosecution Service and Thames Valley Police must decide whether to file formal charges.
That decision could take weeks. If prosecutors find sufficient evidence, they may bring charges. If not, the case could close without further action.
Is Prince Andrew Still in the Line of Succession?
Andrew currently stands eighth in line to the throne. In practical terms, it is highly unlikely he would ever become monarch due to the number of younger royals ahead of him.
Only Parliament can remove someone from the line of succession. Such a move would also require agreement from Commonwealth nations where King Charles serves as head of state.
Andrew remains technically listed as a counsellor of state. In practice, only working royals perform those duties.
