Ukrainian officials reported that 24 citizens awaiting pension payments were murdered in a Russian bombing on Tuesday in the eastern Ukrainian hamlet of Yarova.
The strike raises concerns of a larger escalation as Moscow steps up its aerial campaign and Poland claims shooting down drones that have infringed on its airspace.
The strike was denounced by President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “brutally savage” action that targeted civilians directly. Although the footage he shared could not be independently confirmed, it showed bodies close to a playground and a burned-out van.
The death toll of 24 was confirmed by Ukraine’s interior ministry. According to military officials, Russia employed a glide bomb, a weapon in its arsenal intended to hit targets located well behind the front line.
