Serena Williams continued her comeback training in London, even though heavy rain disrupted grass court practice. Her British hitting partner David Quayle helped arrange indoor courts so she could keep training without interruption.
He secured sessions at top venues like the Hurlingham Club and the National Tennis Centre. These indoor setups allowed her to stay consistent with her preparation despite the weather challenges.
High Level Performance Still Intact
Quayle said Serena is still playing at a very high level. He praised her focus and said she has not lost her sharp edge on court.
He described her as extremely professional in every session. According to him, her standards remain the same as during her peak years.
Facing a Tennis Legend on Court
Quayle admitted the first training sessions felt intense. He had watched Serena on television for years, so facing her serve in real time felt different.
He said he had to adjust quickly because her shots demanded full concentration. While he admired her skill, he also needed to stay focused during rallies.
Her presence on court created pressure at first. Over time, he became more comfortable playing across the net from her.
Supportive Training Environment
Quayle also said Serena’s team encourages open communication. He is allowed to share feedback during practice, which helps improve training quality.
He described the team environment as friendly and easy to work in. Most of their time is spent on court or in training sessions.
Off the court, the focus remains on preparation. However, he said Serena is welcoming and often jokes with the team.
Upcoming Schedule and Future Plans
Quayle is expected to travel to Berlin for Serena’s next tournament, where a new hitting partner has not yet been confirmed.
He is also unsure whether she will play at Wimbledon. Still, he is no longer required to keep her training schedule secret.
He said he now feels more relaxed since the comeback has been made public.
