In an attempt to protest against inflation, at least 1,150 Jamat-e-Islami (JI) activists were detained in several cities, and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) canceled its rally in the federal capital on Friday after the local government refused them permission due to security concerns.
While the PTI took to the streets across the nation today (Friday) to demand the release of the party’s founder, Imran Khan, and other arrested party leaders, JI is demonstrating against a significant increase in electricity costs.
All of the federal capital’s perimeter has been sealed up by containers, essentially cutting it off from the rest of the world, including Rawalpindi.Strict security measures have also been put in place in Islamabad, where blockades on several thoroughfares are intended to prevent demonstrators from congregating and cause severe traffic jams around the city.
Punjab and the federal capital continue to be under the strict application of Section 144, which forbids gatherings, processions, and demonstrations prior to opposition party rallies.
Law enforcement officials have been stationed in the nation’s capital to guarantee adherence, and the public is asked to abstain from any unlawful actions.
In violation of Section 144, a number of JI supporters were detained by the Islamabad police when they attempted to assemble in the federal capital for a protest at D-Chowk.
When JI demonstrators gathered to march towards Islamabad, several more people were also taken into custody in Lahore.
