At least six people were killed in Friday’s strong magnitude 7.4 earthquake off the southern Philippines, which also triggered regional tsunami warnings that were subsequently canceled.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at 9:43 a.m. approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) off the town of Manay in the Mindanao region.
It happened barely 11 days after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu province left 75 people dead and over 1,200 injured, according to official statistics.
Rescue officer Kent Simeon of Pantukan village told AFP that three gold-digging miners were murdered when their shaft fell in the highlands west of Manay. According to him, multiple miners were hurt and one miner was rescued alive.
