Who is Omar Artan?
Omar Artan is a 34 year old football referee from Somalia who rose through local and African football ranks. He became a FIFA referee in 2018 and later earned recognition as one of Africa’s top officials. His career peaked when he was selected for major international assignments, including matches at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Journey from Mogadishu to FIFA level
Artan’s career began in Mogadishu after a leg injury ended his playing days. He first stepped in as a referee during a local match when players asked him to take control after a dispute. That moment changed his path completely. He went on to officiate local and semi professional games before moving into structured national competitions.
His development was supported by mentors, including Osman Jama Dirac, a former head of referees in Somalia. Over time, his performance in African football helped him gain international recognition.
Recognition in African football
In recent years, Artan built a strong reputation across the continent. He was named the best male referee in Africa last year. He also officiated two matches at the Africa Cup of Nations, which further boosted his profile and placed him among rising elite referees in global football.
Denied entry to the United States
Despite his achievements, Artan’s World Cup dream has been disrupted. He was stopped by US border authorities in Miami even though he held a diplomatic passport and a single entry visa. As a result, he was not allowed to continue his role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations in the United States.
He is currently in Istanbul after being removed from US soil, with plans to return to Mogadishu.
Diplomatic response and official position
The Somali government is working through diplomatic channels to resolve the issue. Officials have expressed concern over the decision, as Artan was set to become the first Somali referee to participate in a World Cup finals.
US authorities have stated that all visa decisions go through strict checks based on national security and public safety. They also confirmed that each application is reviewed individually.
A symbol of inspiration
Somali leaders and football officials had praised Artan as a role model for young referees. His rise from informal street matches in Mogadishu to FIFA level officiating is widely seen as a rare success story in Somali sport.
