Estonia and Latvia have reported that drones linked to Ukraine crossed into their airspace from Russia during overnight military activity. One drone struck a power plant chimney in Auvere, Estonia. Another crashed in the Kraslava region in southern Latvia. Authorities confirmed that no serious damage or injuries took place.
Ukrainian strike near Russian Baltic port
The incidents happened during a large Ukrainian drone operation targeting the Russian port of Ust Luga on the Baltic Sea. The port lies close to the Estonian border. Estonian officials said the attack unfolded in three waves between early morning hours.
Officials explain possible cause
Estonian security officials stated that one of the drones likely went off course after entering Russian airspace. Latvian defence representatives gave a similar explanation. They said electronic interference or jamming systems may have disrupted drone navigation signals.
Experts noted that electronic warfare can affect GPS based drones and cause them to miss intended targets.
Safety concerns across the region
Latvian defence authorities said it is not possible to guarantee complete safety while active military operations continue nearby. Estonian security leaders also warned that similar incidents could happen again.
Officials in Estonia added that it is unrealistic to expect a secure barrier along the border during ongoing conflict conditions.
Wider regional impact
A related incident also occurred earlier in Lithuania, where a drone crashed near the border with Belarus. Lithuanian authorities later confirmed it was connected to Ukrainian military activity targeting Russian positions.
