Tajikistan has reported that five Chinese nationals were killed and another five injured in a series of cross-border attacks launched from Afghanistan over the past week. According to Tajik authorities and China’s embassy in Dushanbe, the assaults targeted Chinese workers near the remote Afghan-Tajik frontier.
The Chinese embassy urged all Chinese companies and workers to immediately evacuate the border region, warning that Chinese citizens had been specifically targeted. The most recent incident occurred on Sunday, while another attack on Friday—reportedly involving drones dropping grenades—left three Chinese citizens dead.
Tajikistan, a mountainous nation of 11 million with a secular government, has long had tense relations with Afghanistan’s Taliban administration. Officials have repeatedly raised alarms about smugglers and illegal miners operating near the rugged border.
While Afghanistan has not yet responded to the latest claims, its Foreign Ministry recently blamed an unnamed group seeking to create instability and pledged cooperation with Tajik authorities.
Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met with top security officials on Monday, condemning the attacks and ordering stronger border protection to prevent similar incidents in the future. Tajikistan, which suffered a devastating civil war in the 1990s and maintains close ties with Russia, remains on high alert as tensions rise along its southern frontier.
