Colom stated on Wednesday that the Democrat’s campaign used a “army of lawyers” to “ensure the process is followed according to the law” as the count proceeded. We are in a great place right now,” Colom remarked. “I’m confident once the process plays out, where we are, where the ballots are, we’re gonna win.”

Quick Fact

Detail Information
What Happened Close Mississippi Senate Election
Location Mississippi, United States
Key Candidates Cindy Hyde Smith and Democratic challenger Colom
Outstanding Ballots Approximately 3,600 absentee ballots
Additional Ballots Several thousand affidavit ballots awaiting verification
Voter Participation Strong participation reported among African American voters
Election Status Vote counting and ballot verification continued
Expected Update At least November 10, according to a political science professor
Main Issue Outstanding ballots could affect the final result

Both Sides Confident in Vote Count

After Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress and captured seats in deep red states like South Carolina, Texas, and Kansas—states that had not elected Democratic senators in decades—counting is still ongoing in the Mississippi contest.

Seeing an unanticipated chance to win the seat, the Democratic Party has recently increased its financial support for the Mississippi contest.

As the count continues, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has sent additional campaign and legal resources to the state, according to Punchbowl news.

Hyde-Smith led the contest early on with around 30% of votes counted, but as more ballots were processed.

Mississippi Vote Count Delays Election Result

Mississippi does not permit candidates to request recounts or have automatic recounts for close contests. Additionally, if mail-in ballots are postmarked before election day and received within five business days, the state permits their counting.

As of Wednesday, almost 3,600 absentee ballots were still pending, according to a statement from Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson.

Colom said that thousands of affidavit ballots were still pending. If voters claim to be eligible but do not appear on the rolls or if there is another problem, they can cast their ballots at polling places. After that, election authorities placed them aside for further confirmation.

Candidates Focus on Faith and Campaign Strategies

At over 40%, Mississippi has the highest proportion of African Americans in the United States. This demographic predominantly votes Democratic and apparently turned out in huge numbers this election.

Black voter turnout increased dramatically in the run-up to Election Day, according to Charles Taylor, director of the NAACP’s Mississippi branch.

“We saw long lines for absentee voting,” Taylor reported. “Yesterday, we observed lengthy lineups in person. People from all throughout the state.

“So, when the data comes back, I think it’s going to tell a story that black voters turned out and turned out big.”

Democrats Criticize Neglect of Mississippi Voters

Democrats supported former US Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy in 2020 because they thought he had gained momentum, but Hyde-Smith defeated him handily.

Colom told the site that national Democrats are “conditioned not to care about Mississippi.” “To me, you can’t be a party that cares about working people if you don’t care about working rural people in Mississippi who are struggling.”
