After her predecessor was overthrown by “Gen Z” youth protests, Nepal’s new leader vowed Sunday to comply with protesters’ demands to “end corruption” as she started her duties as interim prime minister.
Ahead of elections in six months, Sushila Karki, 73, the former chief justice, has been entrusted with bringing the country back to order and fulfilling the demands of demonstrators for a future free from corruption.
Due to Nepal’s long-standing economic problems, protests that started on Monday when social media was banned swiftly got out of hand and resulted in the burning of the parliament and other important government facilities.
After taking office on Friday, Karki made her first public remarks. “We have to work according to the thinking of the Gen Z generation,” she commented.
