US President Donald Trump has sharply attacked Democratic lawmakers who urged the military to refuse any illegal orders, labeling them “traitors” and suggesting they should face the death penalty.
Trump’s comments came after six Democratic lawmakers, all with military or intelligence backgrounds, released a video advising service members to prioritize the law and Constitution over unlawful directives. Among them were Senators Elissa Slotkin, a former CIA analyst and Iraq war veteran, and Mark Kelly, a former Navy astronaut, along with Representatives Jason Crow, Maggie Goodlander, Chris Deluzio, and Chrissy Houlahan.
In the video, the lawmakers reminded troops and intelligence officers that they are legally allowed to reject unlawful orders, emphasizing the importance of defending American laws and the Constitution. Slotkin concluded, “Don’t give up the ship.”
Trump criticized the lawmakers’ message on social media, calling it “dangerous” and accusing them of seditious behavior. His remarks echo previous instances where he has suggested punitive measures against political opponents.
Senator Chris Coons condemned Trump’s statement, describing it as “chilling” and urging Republican colleagues to denounce the call for the execution of fellow lawmakers.
Concerns over the legality of Trump’s recent military actions, including strikes in the southern Caribbean and Pacific, have fueled debates on the responsibilities of the military under US law.
