President Donald Trump appears to be warming relations with Elon Musk again, following their public fallout in June 2025. The thaw became visible over the weekend when Trump mentioned Musk in the context of restoring internet access to Iran, where mass protests are ongoing against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime.
“We may get the internet going if possible,” Trump said aboard Air Force One Sunday. “We may speak to Elon because he’s very good at that. He has a very good company. So we may speak to Elon Musk.” The president added, “I’m gonna call him as soon as I’m finished with you.”
Musk’s Role in U.S. Government Work
The Trump–Musk relationship stretches back to early 2025 when Musk served as a special government employee under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a temporary role limited to 130 days per year. During that time, Musk attended Cabinet meetings, worked late at the White House, and helped identify potential federal fraud, waste, and mismanagement.
Trump praised Musk for contributing his talents to the nation, calling him “one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced.”
The Fallout and Gradual Reconciliation
The pair parted ways publicly in June after Musk criticised Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” and made controversial remarks on X. Trump said he was disappointed, though Musk later retracted some comments, admitting he “went too far.”
Since September 2025, the relationship has shown signs of mending. The two were seen conversing at Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s memorial in Arizona. Musk also attended a White House dinner for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in November, further signalling renewed cordiality.
Trump Looks to Musk for Iran Protests
Trump’s recent mention of Musk highlights the possibility that the president may seek Starlink’s satellite internet to support Iranian citizens amid government-enforced blackouts. Trump emphasised Musk’s expertise and suggested the conversation could happen imminently.
This development reflects a careful reconciliation after months of tension, with Musk gradually re-entering Trump’s circle of influence while maintaining his independent commentary on U.S. policy and legislation.
