Taiwan faced heavy flooding as Typhoon Fung-wong swept across the island, forcing the evacuation of over 8,300 residents. The storm, though weakened, brought torrential rains to the eastern mountainous regions, especially in Yilan and Hualien counties. Schools and businesses across southern Taiwan were closed, and at least 51 people were reported injured.
In Yilan’s Dongshan township, rainfall reached a staggering 794 mm (31 inches) in just one day, overwhelming local drainage systems. Television footage showed waters reaching neck height in some areas, while rescue teams worked tirelessly to assist stranded residents.
Fisherman Hung Chun-yi described the chaos: “The water came in so fast, and the drainage couldn’t keep up. My home was flooded up to 60 cm (2 feet) overnight.”
Fung-wong is expected to skim Taiwan’s southern tip before moving back into the Pacific Ocean. The typhoon previously hit the Philippines, claiming 18 lives. Taiwan has faced similar deadly floods earlier this year, including a September storm in Hualien that also killed 18 people.
