US Deploys Carrier Strike Groups Near Iran
Satellite imagery has confirmed that the US aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, is near Iran, highlighting Washington’s growing pressure over Iran’s nuclear program and recent violent crackdowns on protesters. The Abraham Lincoln leads a strike group with three guided missile destroyers. It carries 90 aircraft, including F-35 fighters, and a crew of 5,680. The carrier reportedly reached the Gulf region in late January and is currently off the coast of Oman, about 700 kilometers from Iran.
Additionally, the USS Gerald R Ford, the world’s largest warship, is en route to the Middle East and may arrive within three weeks.
Expanded US Military Presence
Satellite monitoring has tracked a total of 12 US ships in the region. These include:
- USS Abraham Lincoln with three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers forming a carrier strike group
- Two long-range missile destroyers
- Three specialized combat ships at Bahrain naval station
- Two destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean near Souda Bay
- One destroyer in the Red Sea
Air operations have also increased. F-15 and EA-18 fighter jets are now stationed at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. The US has also moved additional cargo planes, refueling aircraft, and surveillance planes to the region.
Iran Responds with Military Drills
Iran has shown its own military readiness in response. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted a maritime drill in the Strait of Hormuz. The exercise included naval vessel inspections and missile launches. The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route, carrying roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas, including exports from Iran’s main terminal at Kharg Island.
Comparison with Past US Operations
Military expert Justin Crump explains that the current US deployment in the Middle East is more sustainable and prepared than past operations in Venezuela or last year’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, known as Operation Midnight Hammer. Unlike previous missions, the US now has multiple aircraft carrier strike groups, destroyers, combat ships, and eight airbases in the region. This setup allows a higher sortie rate, potentially up to 800 flights per day, to neutralize any Iranian response.
Crump adds that the deployment is not only about strike preparation. It acts as a broad deterrent capable of scaling up or down depending on the situation. It also supports allied forces, including Israel, in the event of escalation.
