Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois has spoken out in defense of Vinicius Jr after his celebration in last week’s Champions League match against Benfica in Portugal. The goalkeeper said the celebration shouldn’t be used to justify claims of racism.
Vinicius also received a yellow card for celebrating in front of the Benfica fans after his goal.
Mourinho Criticizes Vinicius
Benfica coach Jose Mourinho said he thought Vinicius celebrated disrespectfully and provoked the crowd. “He wasn’t just happy about scoring that amazing goal. When you score like that, you should celebrate respectfully,” Mourinho said.
Courtois disagreed. “Mourinho will always defend his club, but using Vinicius’ celebration against him isn’t right. Vini didn’t do anything wrong. Many players celebrate the same way against us,” he said.
Real Madrid Supports Vinicius
Courtois also made it clear he believes Vinicius completely. “Vini has never said anything like that. I’m sure he heard something offensive. I trust him completely,” Courtois said.
The match was paused for about 10 minutes after Vinicius told the referee what happened. Real Madrid players briefly left the pitch but returned after Vinicius decided to continue. Courtois also spoke about racist gestures in the stands, saying stadium staff need to act immediately.
UEFA Investigation and Fight Against Racism
UEFA has given Prestianni a provisional sanction while a full investigation continues. Additional punishment could follow.
Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa urged UEFA to take a strong stance. “UEFA has always fought against racism. Now they have a chance to do more than just banners and slogans. I hope they take it,” Arbeloa said.
