Birmingham City dropped from sixth to 20th place in the standings after dismissing manager Wayne Rooney on Tuesday. Rooney won just two of his 15 Championship games in charge of the team, according to The Athletic.
Carl Robinson, the coach of the first team, has also been fired.
“Birmingham City has parted ways with manager Wayne Rooney and first-team coach Carl Robinson,” the club said in a statement.
“Despite their greatest efforts, the outcomes have fallen short of the initial, clearly stated goals. Consequently, the board believes that the football club would benefit from a change in management.
“Birmingham City’s board and management are completely in sync and will keep pushing change and making big decisions to rebuild the organization for its supporters and community.”
The board would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to Wayne and Carl for their tireless work.
“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady, and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club,” the former English football player said in response to his dismissal.
Football is a results-driven sport, and I acknowledge that the team hasn’t performed to the degree I had hoped. But time is the most valuable resource a manager needs, and I don’t think 13 weeks was long enough to oversee the necessary improvements.
It will take me some time to go past this setback on a personal level. Since I was sixteen years old, I have been involved in professional football, either as a player or manager. I’m going to spend some time with my family right now while I get ready for my next managerial chance.”
In addition, he sent his best wishes for the football team’s “pursuit of their ambitions” to its owners.
Until a permanent replacement is identified, professional development coach Steve Spooner will hold the position.
Rooney, who was hired when Birmingham was in the promotion play-offs, has come under fire for his dismal run of play, which has seen the team drop two spots above the relegation zone despite nine league losses.
.After 19 months, the forward who had previously played for Everton and Manchester United left Derby County because of a 21-point deduction and poor results in the 2021–2022 campaign. He also played for 15 months with DC United of Major League Soccer (MLS), departing in October due to the team’s inability to make the playoffs.
