Wes Streeting calls the’shocking’ NHS ‘failures’ in the murder case of Valdo Calocane of Nottingham.

The health minister has stated that there were "multiple and fundamental failures" in the way the NHS managed the mental health care of Nottingham killer Valdo Calocane.

Wes Streeting described the conclusions of a Care Quality Commission (CQC) assessment that indicated the NHS had minimized the paranoid schizophrenia of Calocane as “deeply distressing.”

In June 2023, Calocane fatally stabbed caregiver Ian Coates, pupils Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber.

January saw him placed in a high security facility where prosecutors accepted his plea of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished culpability, effectively locking him there “very probably” for the remainder of his life.

Mr. Streeting stated: “I believe the alarming thing about the report from the Care Quality Commission is how many mistakes and basic errors there were in terms of health.

And, unexpectedly, the fact that he was let go for missing class when, in reality, his absence should have prompted stricter supervision.”
Prior to release, the report’s conclusions were presented to the Nottinghamshire NHS Trust, which oversaw Calocane’s treatment, according to Mr. Streeting, and they “have already been acting to implement some of its findings”.

He also mentioned that mental health patients who miss appointments will not be released from the NHS in England.
